Description

Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2008 is a rare opportunity to experience one of the Southern Rhône’s most revered traditionalists in a cooler, more classical vintage. Crafted in tiny quantities and released only when Bonneau deemed it ready, this cuvée marries depth and spice with a lifted, energetic profile. Named after a family member and drawn from top parcels (notably within the famed La Crau plateau), Marie Beurrier is a selection of old-vine fruit that sits just below Bonneau’s legendary Cuvée Célestins, and has long enjoyed near-cult status among Rhône collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Marie Beurrier shows a vibrant, medium to deep ruby red, still lively in color with only the faintest hint of evolution at the rim. The nose is intensely aromatic and spicy, with red and dark berries—raspberry, cherry, and blackcurrant—layered over notes of star anise, dried lavender, garrigue herbs, and a subtle musky, almost gamey nuance that is very typical of classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape. With air, floral tones and hints of dried rose and licorice become more pronounced, adding complexity and lift. On the palate, this is deep yet remarkably energetic for the appellation and vintage. Juicy raspberry and red cherry fruits drive the core, framed by fine, silky tannins and a refreshing spine of acidity that keeps everything focused and precise. Savory notes of spice, cracked pepper, dried thyme and a touch of earth unfold across the mid-palate, leading into a long, sapid finish that remains both bright and concentrated. While 2008 is generally a more approachable, earlier-drinking year, top bottles like this have aged gracefully; it is beautifully open and expressive now, with enough structure and freshness to continue drinking well over the next several years for those who enjoy evolved, traditional Rhône.

Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is sourced primarily from old Grenache vines—supplemented by small amounts of other permitted Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties—rooted in the stony, sun-soaked soils of Châteauneuf, including the iconic galets roulés and sandy parcels that help give the wine both power and finesse. All fruit is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with ruthless selection in the vineyard and cellar to retain only the best bunches. Henri Bonneau worked with minimal intervention, favoring very long élevage in well-seasoned foudres and old barrels, native yeast fermentations, and gentle extraction. The result is a wine that reflects its terroir and vintage with striking honesty: no new oak sheen, no makeup, just a slow-matured, traditionally crafted Châteauneuf-du-Pape of great character.

Food & Serving
This 2008 Marie Beurrier shines alongside refined, savory dishes rather than overtly powerful or heavily sauced plates. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, duck or game birds, slow-braised beef or veal stews, and dishes built around wild mushrooms, lentils, and root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Manchego, or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to keep the aromatics lively and the alcohol in check. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to unfold its full aromatic complexity, while being mindful that an older vintage like 2008 does not need excessive air.

Producer
Henri Bonneau was one of the most iconic and uncompromising figures in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for his tiny cellar, tiny production, and unwavering commitment to traditional methods. From his family’s holdings in some of the appellation’s finest parcels, including parts of La Crau, he crafted wines that became benchmarks for soulful, ageworthy Southern Rhône. Rather than chasing trends, Bonneau focused on intuitive vineyard work, low yields, meticulous selection, and extraordinarily long aging in old wood, releasing his cuvées only when he felt they had reached proper maturity. His bottles—especially Célestins and Marie Beurrier—are fiercely sought after by collectors and remain reference points for authentic, old-school Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
