Tasting Notes
In the glass, Haut Brion 2009 shows a deep, opaque garnet-red core with a gently fading rim, hinting at both concentration and early evolution. The nose opens slowly—initially reserved and tight—before unfurling layers of warm blackberry, plum compote, mulberry and blackcurrant juice. With air, more detail appears: notes of star anise, mocha, cigar box, and damp earth, along with a subtle smoky-mineral edge that speaks to its Graves origin. On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense, and finely knit, with mouth-filling black fruit wrapped in a firm yet ultra-refined tannic structure. The tannins are ripe and grainy, giving a tactile, architectural frame to the wine’s generous fruit core. Dark berries, black cherries, spice and graphite unfold gradually, supported by fresh acidity that keeps everything poised rather than heavy. The finish is very long, earthy, and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of cocoa, warm stones and savory spice. This vintage has significant aging potential—while already impressive, it will continue to evolve and gain complexity over the next 15–30 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Haut Brion 2009 comes from the gravelly, heat-retaining soils of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux, an historic terroir where deep gravel, sand and clay overlay a complex subsoil, giving the wines their signature smoky minerality and refined structure. The vineyards are planted primarily to the classic Bordeaux red varieties, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with supporting Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, to capture the nuances of each plot and the exceptional conditions of the 2009 vintage. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine ages on its fine lees and gains texture, complexity, and aromatic depth before final blending and bottling at the château.

Food & Serving
This is a grand vin made for equally grand dishes: think classic roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, braised beef, venison, or slow-cooked veal shank. It also shines alongside game birds, truffled dishes, rich mushroom preparations (morels, cepes), and aged hard cheeses like Comté or old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C, allowing the wine to warm gently in the glass. For current enjoyment, decant 2–3 hours in advance to help it open and reveal its full aromatic range; older, well-cellared bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant to preserve their more delicate tertiary notes.
