Description
Gulfi NeroBufaleffj Nero d'Avola Bio 2016 is an expressive, single-vineyard red from the sun‑drenched southern tip of Sicily, crafted entirely from organically grown Nero d’Avola. Sourced from the famed Bufaleffj cru in the Val di Noto near Pachino, it captures both the power and elegance that this historic terroir can deliver. This 2016 release is a benchmark example of Gulfi’s philosophy: old vines, low yields, and careful élevage to create a wine of depth, refinement, and distinct place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 NeroBufaleffj shows a deep, concentrated ruby red core with garnet reflections beginning to form at the rim, hinting at its developing complexity. The nose is layered and evocative: ripe red and black berries, dark cherries, and juicy red plums unfold over nuances of leather, iron, and sweet baking spices—especially vanilla—alongside earthy tones, dried flowers, and a subtle hint of wild mushrooms.
On the palate the wine is supple and finely textured at first, with a sleek, almost silky entry that quickly builds into a more muscular, juicy mid‑palate. Ripe, dark red fruit is framed by vibrant yet polished acidity and firmly woven tannins, giving a dense but not heavy structure. Savory notes—spice, tobacco leaf, a touch of cocoa and mineral saltiness—add complexity and length. The finish is persistent, with fruit and spice lingering harmoniously. Drinking beautifully now with a short decant, this 2016 still has the concentration and structure to evolve gracefully for another 8–10 years from now, gaining further tertiary notes of leather, dried herbs, and truffle.
Production
Bufaleffj is a single vineyard in the Val di Noto, within the Pachino district at Sicily’s southernmost tip, an area long recognized for producing some of the island’s most characterful Nero d’Avola. Here Gulfi’s vines grow as traditional alberello (bush vines) on a mosaic of soils—black clay, white limestone, and pockets of red sand—each contributing different nuances of power, minerality, and aromatic lift. Farmed organically, the vines are worked by hand and yields are kept low. The Nero d’Avola grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and undergo a very slow, extended fermentation on the skins, extracting color, aroma, and fine tannins. After pressing, the wine completes malolactic fermentation, then rests for about two years in 500‑liter wooden barrels (tonneaux), a choice that balances gentle oxygenation and spice without overwhelming the fruit. Bottling is done with minimal intervention to preserve the site’s character.
Food & Serving
This is a food‑loving Nero d’Avola that shines alongside richly flavored Mediterranean and Italian dishes. Think slow‑braised lamb shank with herbs, ragù alla Siciliana, grilled or roasted meats, game birds, or hearty stews with tomatoes and olives. It also pairs beautifully with umami‑rich plates such as wild mushroom risotto, roasted aubergine, or aged cheeses like Pecorino, Ragusano, and mature Parmesan. For seafood, try it with robust preparations like grilled swordfish or tuna with capers and herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); decant for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Azienda Gulfi, based in Chiaramonte Gulfi in southeastern Sicily, was founded in the 1990s by Vito Catania with a clear vision: to show that Nero d’Avola could express terroir with the same precision as the great wines of Europe. Working organically from the outset and relying on dry‑farmed alberello bush vines, Gulfi has become one of the leading names in Sicilian fine wine. The estate’s series of single‑vineyard Nero d’Avola wines—such as NeroBufaleffj, NeroBaronj, and NeroSanloré—has helped redefine the reputation of Pachino and the Val di Noto, elevating the area from a source of bulk reds to a reference for terroir‑driven, ageworthy wines. Regularly acclaimed by Italy’s top wine guides and international critics, Gulfi is widely regarded as a pioneer in showcasing the elegance, depth, and longevity that Nero d’Avola can achieve in the right hands and the right sites.
