Description
Guigal La Turque 2015 is one of the towering icons of Côte-Rôtie, a dense, tightly coiled red that promises extraordinary complexity with time. Sourced from the famed Côte Brune slopes, this cuvée combines power, precision and an exotic spice profile that makes it one of the Rhône’s most sought-after wines. Still youthful and a touch reserved today, it’s widely expected to flirt with perfection as it evolves over the next decade and beyond.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Turque 2015 is deeply concentrated, almost opaque ruby with a purple rim that hints at its youth and intensity. The nose is initially reserved but reveals layers of dark berries—blackberry, cassis and black cherry—interwoven with a striking medley of cracked black pepper, allspice, cardamom and subtle smoked meat, alongside hints of violet, incense and dark chocolate.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, structured and tightly knit, with a core of ripe, dark fruit wrapped in firm, fine-grained tannins. The spice profile is vivid, echoing pepper, exotic baking spices and a mineral, almost ferrous edge from the Côte Brune’s schist-rich soils. While the texture is plush, the wine is currently more about structure and potential than immediate opulence, finishing long, savory and precise. This is a wine built for the long haul, with an optimal drinking window likely beginning after 5–6 years of cellaring and the capacity to age gracefully for 20+ years.
Production
La Turque is sourced from a single, steeply terraced vineyard on the Côte Brune in Côte-Rôtie, where dark schist and iron-rich soils contribute power, structure and an intense mineral backbone. The vines, predominantly Syrah with a small proportion of Viognier co-planted in the traditional style, are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness due to the challenging, hillside terrain that makes mechanization impossible. In the cellar, the grapes are typically destemmed and undergo a long, temperature-controlled maceration to extract color, aroma and tannin, followed by élevage in small oak barrels—largely new French oak—which adds polish, spice complexity and textural depth without overwhelming the distinctive character of the site.
Food & Serving
La Turque 2015 is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes such as slow-braised lamb shank, roasted venison, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast with dark fruit reduction or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also shines alongside truffle-infused dishes, hearty stews and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large-bowled glasses to allow the aromas to unfurl. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended if opened in the next decade, both to soften the tannins and to fully release the wine’s layered spice and dark-fruit complexity.
Producer
Maison E. Guigal, founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, has become synonymous with the very highest expressions of the Rhône Valley. Now run by the second and third generations of the Guigal family, the estate has played a central role in elevating Côte-Rôtie to international renown, thanks in large part to its trio of legendary “La La” wines: La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque. With meticulous vineyard work, low yields and an uncompromising approach to selection and élevage, Guigal has amassed a remarkable collection of top scores and critical acclaim, cementing its status as one of the benchmark producers not only of the Northern Rhône, but of the fine wine world as a whole.
