Description

Guigal La Mouline 2009 is one of the Rhône Valley’s most coveted Côte-Rôtie wines, celebrated for its seductive texture and remarkable depth. Crafted in a distinctly opulent style, this vintage marries richness with aromatic lift, thanks to an unusually high proportion of Viognier in the blend. A benchmark bottling from one of the appellation’s most iconic single vineyards, it shows why La Mouline is considered a reference point for Syrah-based wines worldwide.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Mouline 2009 is deep ruby to nearly opaque, with a vivid sheen that hints at its concentration and youthfulness despite its age. The nose is intensely expressive and layered, opening with aromas of roasted and caramelised meats, toasted oak and exotic spices, then unfolding into notes of dark blackberry and blackcurrant, coffee bean, and a subtle floral lift from the Viognier. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, velvety and richly textured Côte-Rôtie with an almost hedonistic sense of volume. Dense black berry and cassis fruit are wrapped in notes of espresso, cocoa, smoked meat and sweet spice, while the 11% Viognier adds perfume, suppleness and a touch of brightness to the mid-palate. The tannins are abundant yet beautifully polished, giving a glossy, seamless feel through the long, savoury finish. While already approachable for those who enjoy power and generosity, this 2009 still has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for at least another decade or more under good cellaring conditions.

Production
La Mouline comes from a famed amphitheatre-shaped single vineyard in Côte-Rôtie, planted on steep, terraced slopes of mica-schist and granite with a southerly exposure that encourages optimal ripeness. Vines here are ancient by any standard, and much of the Syrah is interplanted with Viognier, which explains the unusually high 11% in this cuvée. Harvesting is done by hand on the precipitous slopes, with rigorous selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. Traditional Guigal methods are used in the cellar: long macerations and extended élevage in new French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop its signature combination of power, silkiness and aromatic complexity while integrating oak and polishing the tannins.

Food & Serving
This 2009 La Mouline is a superb match for rich, flavourful dishes such as slow-braised beef short ribs, côte de boeuf, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, or game birds like duck and pigeon. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle, or a reduction sauce, and can stand up to aged hard cheeses and richer semi-soft varieties. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 1–3 hours is recommended to let the wine fully open, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.

Producer
Maison E. Guigal, founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, has become synonymous with the very highest quality in the Rhône Valley. Under the guidance of the Guigal family, the estate has elevated Côte-Rôtie to global prominence, particularly through its trio of legendary single-vineyard wines: La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque. La Mouline, sourced from one of the appellation’s oldest and most revered vineyards, is often noted for being the most sensual and Burgundian in style of the three. Guigal’s meticulous vineyard work, uncompromising fruit selection and long, patient aging regime have earned the domaine a long list of top critical scores and helped define the modern image of Côte-Rôtie as a source of world-class, cellar-worthy wines.
