Description

Guidalberto Tenuta San Guido 2022 is the second wine from the legendary Tuscan estate behind Sassicaia, crafted to be approachable in its youth while still carrying the estate’s unmistakable elegance. This Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend delivers structure, depth and immediate pleasure, wrapped in a refined, modern Tuscan style. Named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a pioneering ancestor of the family, it pays homage to both heritage and innovation at Tenuta San Guido.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Guidalberto 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby red with youthful purple highlights along the rim. The nose is generous and refined, opening with ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum, followed by notes of violet, Mediterranean herbs, cedar and a touch of tobacco and graphite that hint at its Bordeaux-inspired character. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a polished, supple texture. Ripe black and red fruits are supported by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine lively and precise. Flavors of blackberry, cassis and sour cherry mingle with hints of cocoa, spice and a subtle savory note on the long, balanced finish. While crafted to be enjoyable young, the 2022 vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–10 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with a few years of cellaring.

Production
Guidalberto is produced at Tenuta San Guido’s estate in Bolgheri, along the Tuscan coast, where maritime breezes, abundant sunshine and well-drained, stony soils create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. The vines draw character from a mix of calcareous, clay and rocky soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate aromas and structure. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection at optimal ripeness, then gently destemmed. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with maceration tailored to extract color, aroma and refined tannins rather than excessive power. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (often partly used, to preserve fruit purity) for several months before bottling, allowing the components to harmonize while maintaining the vibrant, youthful profile that defines Guidalberto.

Food & Serving
Guidalberto 2022 is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, lamb chops, game birds, and classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù or pappardelle with meat sauce. It also complements aged hard cheeses, charcuterie and mushroom-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Younger bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to soften the tannins and open up the aromatic profile, while more mature bottles can be served directly after gentle pouring.

Producer
Tenuta San Guido is one of Italy’s most celebrated estates, located in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, and is best known as the birthplace of Sassicaia, the wine that helped create the ‘Super Tuscan’ category and revolutionized Italian fine wine. The estate belongs to the Incisa della Rocchetta family, who began experimenting with Cabernet Sauvignon in the mid-20th century, challenging traditional notions of what Italian wine could be. Guidalberto, introduced later, was conceived as a wine that would showcase the estate’s distinctive terroir in a more accessible style and with earlier drinkability than Sassicaia. Today, Tenuta San Guido is regarded as a benchmark producer in the region, with a track record of critical acclaim and a reputation for combining elegance, ageworthiness and a strong sense of place in every wine it releases.
