Description
Gruaud Larose 2015 is a distinguished 2nd Growth from Saint-Julien that captures the classic depth and refinement of great Bordeaux. From a historic estate dating back to 1725, this vintage combines poised structure, vibrant fruit, and impressive aging potential in a large-format 600 cl bottle that makes it especially attractive for cellaring and special occasions.
Tasting Notes
Medium garnet-purple in the glass, the 2015 Gruaud Larose shows lifted aromas of bright red cherries, ripe raspberries, and fresh blackcurrants, layered with cinnamon stick, rose petals, fallen leaves, and dried Provençal herbs. On the palate it is medium- to full-bodied, with tightly woven red and black fruit, a firm grainy frame, and lively freshness that carries through to a long, perfumed finish.
There is a beautiful tension here between ripeness and finesse, with the structure to evolve gracefully over time. While already expressive, this wine has the hallmark of a long-lived Saint-Julien and should continue to gain complexity with further aging.
Production
The estate sits in the southern part of Saint-Julien on south-facing vineyard sites atop the appellation’s plateau, where well-positioned terroir supports steady ripening and balance. The vines are notably old, averaging more than 46 years, with some parcels exceeding 80 years, contributing concentration and depth. The château has also been transitioning toward organic farming since 2019 and uses biodynamic-inspired practices, including herbal teas and trace mineral treatments, to support vine health and biodiversity.
Food & Serving
This classic Bordeaux is a natural match for roasted lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, game birds, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and dishes with earthy elements such as mushrooms or truffle. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young to allow the aromatics and structure to fully unfold.
Producer
Gruaud Larose is one of Saint-Julien’s most iconic estates and a historic 2nd Growth classified in 1855, with origins dating back to 1725. Now owned by Jacques Merlaut and the Taillan group, the château is known for its strong sense of continuity, deep family heritage, and remarkable cellar-worthy wines. Its reputation for longevity and consistent quality has made it both a benchmark wine of the region and a sought-after label among collectors.
