Bottled only in outstanding vintages and drawn from some of the estate’s oldest high-altitude parcels, it offers a deeply authentic and ageworthy take on Tuscan Sangiovese. The 2011 vintage, farmed organically and released after extended bottle ageing, captures both the warmth of the year and the precision of the Palazzino style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2011 Grosso Sanese shows a deep ruby core shading towards garnet at the rim – a classic sign of well-evolved, high-quality Chianti Classico. The nose is complex and inviting with layers of ripe sour cherry and plum, dried violets, leather, pipe tobacco and a gentle balsamic lift, supported by subtle notes of sweet spice and cedar from its time in French oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with firm but well-resolved tannins and a vibrant, savoury acidity that keeps everything fresh and precise. Flavours of macerated cherry, dark berries and plum mingle with hints of forest floor, spice box, dried herbs and a fine mineral edge. The long, persistent finish is marked by refined tannins and lingering notes of cherry, tobacco and earthy spice. Already beautifully integrated thanks to its age and large-format bottle, this magnum still has solid aging potential, with 10–20 years from the vintage being realistic under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The Sangiovese for Grosso Sanese Selezione di Famiglia comes from some of Podere il Palazzino’s oldest vineyards, planted at 350–500 metres above sea level on sloping hillsides with clay- and limestone-rich soils. This high-altitude, well-drained terroir, combined with marked diurnal temperature swings, produces grapes with intense aromatics, vibrant acidity and deep structure. Farmed organically, the vines are harvested by hand, and the bunches undergo careful sorting before fermentation. The must ferments in stainless steel, with a maceration of around 20–25 days to extract colour, fine tannins and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged for approximately 18–24 months in French oak (primarily tonneaux and barriques, only a minority new) before further maturation in bottle, allowing fruit, oak and structure to harmonise before release.

Food & Serving
This is a structured, gastronomic Chianti Classico that shines alongside classic Tuscan fare. Pair it with bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, game birds, truffle dishes or aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano and Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at around 18 °C. In magnum, and given its age and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to let the wine fully open and shed any remaining bottle bouquet, especially if served at the heart of a meal.
