Description
Griesel & Compagnie Riesling Réserve Dosage Zero Exquisit 2013 is a meticulously crafted German sparkling wine from the Hessische Bergstraße, born from the very base wines that marked the beginning of Griesel’s journey in Bensheim. Made entirely from Riesling and bottled with zero dosage, it offers an unadorned, bone-dry expression of terroir and long lees aging. With fewer than a thousand bottles produced, this is a rare and highly individualist sparkling Riesling for those who appreciate precision and depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2013 Riesling Sekt shows a luminous straw to pale gold hue with a fine, persistent bead that speaks to its extended maturation on the lees. The nose is complex and fully developed, revealing classic matured Riesling notes of petrol and flint alongside ripe mirabelle plum, apricot and a hint of orange zest. Layers of autolytic character evoke fresh brioche, pastry dough and a subtle cellar-like yeasty aroma.
On the palate, the wine is strikingly dry, with a vibrant, linear acidity that provides backbone and energy from the first sip. The fine mousse lifts a core of orchard fruit—apple, pear and stone fruit—carrying it elegantly across the tongue. As it opens, hints of mango and pineapple introduce a delicate exotic nuance, adding dimension without any sweetness. The finish is long, precise and refreshingly saline, with the mature Riesling character and leesy complexity lingering. Now beautifully evolved after many years on the lees, it is drinking at a superb peak, yet should remain fascinating for a few more years for those who enjoy tertiary notes in sparkling wines.
Production
Sourced from vineyards along the Hessische Bergstraße, this Riesling benefits from a relatively cool, hilly climate and mixed soils of loess, sand and stone that favor aromatic expression and fresh acidity. The base wines that launched Griesel’s sparkling project were vinified with meticulous care, with roughly 70% matured in stainless steel to preserve purity and tension, and 30% aged in 500-liter tonneaux to add subtle texture and complexity. After the traditional method secondary fermentation in bottle, the wine spent several years resting on its lees, developing its fine mousse and brioche-like autolytic profile. Bottled as Dosage Zero, it is left completely dry, allowing the varietal Riesling character and terroir to shine without the influence of added sugar.
Food & Serving
This ultra-dry, structured Riesling Sekt is a superb partner for refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, trout or char, sushi and sashimi, as well as lightly spiced Asian cuisine where citrus and ginger feature. It also works well with poultry terrines, veal tartare, or soft-ripened cheeses like Camembert and Chaource. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a quick, gentle decant in a chilled carafe can help the mature aromas unfold and show the full spectrum of fruit, petrol and brioche notes.
Producer
Griesel & Compagnie, based in Bensheim on the Hessische Bergstraße, has quickly gained attention as one of Germany’s most exciting producers of traditional method sparkling wines. Founded with a clear focus on high-quality Sekte rather than still wines, the estate has helped redefine what German sparkling wine can be, emphasizing rigorous vineyard work, low yields and extended lees aging. By championing varieties like Riesling in a Champagne-inspired, terroir-driven style, Griesel has brought new prestige to the Hessische Bergstraße, a small but historic region often overshadowed by its larger neighbors. Their limited-production, long-aged bottlings—such as this pioneering Reserve Riesling—have earned critical acclaim and a loyal following among sommeliers and collectors looking for characterful, ageworthy German sparkling wines.
