Description
Griesel & Compagnie Pinot Blanc Auerbacher Fürstenlager Brut Nature 2019 is a meticulously crafted German sparkling wine that showcases the precision and elegance of single-vineyard Pinot Blanc from the Hessische Bergstraße. Produced in tiny quantities (just 925 bottles), this Blanc de Blancs has earned outstanding acclaim, including 96 points from both Falstaff and Robert Parker. As a Brut Nature from a steep, granitic site, it is a pure, terroir-driven expression of German Sekt at an exceptionally high level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2019 Brut Nature shows a bright, pale straw-yellow color with fine, persistent perlage that speaks to its long aging on the lees. The bubbles are delicate yet energetic, forming a refined mousse.
The nose is precise and layered: notes of green and yellow orchard fruit (pear, crisp apple), lemon zest and white peach mingle with subtle brioche, toasted hazelnut, and hints of wet granite and chalk. Gentle floral nuances and a touch of herbal spice add further complexity. On the palate, the wine is bone-dry, taut, and chiselled, with a striking mineral backbone reflecting its granitic soils. The first impression is one of tension and vibrancy, with mouthwatering acidity wrapped around flavors of citrus peel, green pear, quince, and a saline, almost smoky mineral note. The long lees aging brings a fine, creamy texture and discreet autolytic tones—brioche, biscuit, and roasted nuts—without ever weighing the wine down. The finish is long, clean, and laser-focused, leaving a lingering impression of stone, citrus, and subtle oak spice. Thanks to its structure, 45 months on the lees, and no dosage, this 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will continue to gain complexity and harmony over the next 5–10 years in a good cellar.
Production
The fruit for this cuvée comes from the Auerbacher Fürstenlager, a renowned steep parcel in the Hessische Bergstraße with a southwest exposure at around 208 meters above sea level. The vines, planted in 2002, grow on granitic gravel with a light loess cover, giving the wine its distinctive mineral tension and finesse. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested to preserve freshness and integrity, then undergo spontaneous fermentation and full malolactic conversion in French oak, adding texture and subtle spice. After the primary vinification, the base wine is bottled for secondary fermentation and spends an impressive 45 months on the lees, building depth, complexity, and a refined mousse. Disgorged on 23 May 2024, the wine is released as Dosage Zéro (Brut Nature), with no added sugar, allowing the site and the vintage to speak clearly and transparently.
Food & Serving
This Brut Nature Pinot Blanc is a superb gastronomic sparkling wine, ideal for refined dishes rather than just an aperitif. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, and other shellfish, as well as delicately prepared white fish, sashimi, and crudo. Its structure and savory mineral edge also make it an excellent match for poultry, veal schnitzel, or pork with light cream sauces, and it works wonderfully alongside soft and semi-hard cheeses, especially goat cheese or mild alpine styles. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief decant in a carafe, or simply pouring into larger white wine or Burgundy-style glasses, can help the wine open up aromatically, especially in its youth.
Producer
Griesel & Compagnie is one of the leading names in the renaissance of high-quality German Sekt, based in Bensheim in the Hessische Bergstraße. Working from historic cellars and focusing exclusively on traditional-method sparkling wines, the estate has quickly gained a reputation for precision, terroir expression, and long lees aging, often rivaling top grower Champagnes in quality. Their single-vineyard bottlings, such as this Auerbacher Fürstenlager, highlight the unique potential of the region’s granitic slopes and cool climate.
