Description

Gresy Barbaresco Gajun 1997 is a beautifully mature expression of Nebbiolo from Piemonte, offering the elegance and structure that have made Barbaresco one of Italy’s most admired reds. Coming from the historic Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy, this wine reflects both the family’s long legacy in the Langhe and their deep understanding of the Martinenga hillside that has helped define their reputation.

Tasting Notes
With age, Barbaresco Gajun is expected to show a garnet-to-brick red hue, softened at the rim but still vibrant at the core. The bouquet typically evolves into layers of dried cherry, rose petal, orange peel, truffle, leather, tobacco, and sweet spice, with the tertiary complexity that mature Nebbiolo is known for. On the palate, it should be refined and layered, with firm but polished tannins, bright acidity, and a savory, mineral edge. The finish is likely long and elegant, with dried fruit, earth, and floral notes lingering. This kind of Barbaresco can still offer pleasure with careful storage, though it is now in its mature drinking window rather than built for further long-term aging.

Production
The grapes come from the Langhe hills in Piemonte, an area shaped by cool nights, rolling slopes, and marl-rich soils that are especially well suited to Nebbiolo. The family’s focus on Martinenga has been central to their work for generations, and their underground cellar helps maintain natural temperature stability while also reducing energy use, supported by solar panels above ground. Vinification would have followed traditional Barbaresco methods aimed at preserving finesse, structure, and site expression, with careful maturation before release.

Food & Serving
This is a wine to enjoy with richly flavored dishes such as braised beef, roast lamb, veal shank, porcini mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if needed, especially if the bottle has been stored for many years, to help it open and separate any natural sediment.

Producer
Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy is one of Piemonte’s historic names, with family roots dating back to 1650 and a long association with the prized Martinenga estate. Alberto di Gresy began bottling under his own name in 1973 after previously selling grapes to other producers, and soon established a reputation for interpreting Nebbiolo with precision and character, including the launch of Camp Gros Barbaresco Martinenga DOCG in 1978. Today the estate spans 45 hectares across Langhe and Monferrato and has expanded its portfolio to include several reds and whites, while remaining closely identified with quality Barbaresco.
