Tasting Notes
In the glass, this aged Barbaresco shows a beautifully evolved garnet hue with brick-orange rim, a hallmark of mature Nebbiolo. The nose is deeply expressive and layered, offering dried rose petals, tar, leather, forest floor, and truffle, alongside notes of dried cherry, blood orange, balsamic spice, and a hint of tobacco and cedar from long bottle aging. On the palate, the wine is graceful yet still firmly structured, with silky but persistent tannins and a vibrant acidity that has carried it elegantly through the decades. Flavors of dried red berries, sour cherry, and plum intertwine with savory notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, earthy mushroom, and spice. Production
Camp Gros is a prized sub-parcel of the historic Martinenga vineyard in Barbaresco, a south and southwest-facing amphitheater of white marl, clay, and limestone that is ideally suited to Nebbiolo. The combination of altitude, exposure, and poor, well-drained soils produces grapes of notable perfume, finesse, and tension. In 1989, fruit would have been harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only the healthiest clusters were used. Traditional vinification for Barbaresco typically involves a long maceration on the skins to extract tannin, color, and aromatic complexity, followed by extended maturation in large oak casks and/or traditional barrels, and then further refinement in bottle before release—an approach that underpins the wine’s remarkable longevity.

This mature Barbaresco is best showcased alongside refined, savory dishes that echo its earthy complexity: truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with butter and sage, braised veal or beef, roasted game birds, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 18°C (around 64°F) and allow the bottle to rest upright for several hours before opening to let any sediment settle. Decant gently for 30–60 minutes to help the wine open up, taking care not to overexpose it to air, as fully mature wines can be more delicate.
