Description
Giuseppe Cortese Langhe Nebbiolo 2010 is a beautiful example of how refined and expressive Nebbiolo can be, even outside the Barbaresco DOCG designation. Sourced from vineyards in the Barbaresco area and treated with the same care as the estate’s top wines, it’s often described as a “baby Barbaresco” with remarkable finesse and precision. The outstanding 2010 vintage in Piemonte, known for its cool growing season and slow, even ripening, brings extra clarity, structure and age-worthiness to this cuvée.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, pale garnet-red hue with a subtly brick-tinged rim, reflecting its maturity and classic Nebbiolo character. The nose is highly aromatic and detailed: dried roses, violets, sour and black cherries, wild raspberries and redcurrants mingle with notes of anise, liquorice, orange peel, tar, forest floor and a gentle earthy spice.
On the palate, this Langhe Nebbiolo is elegant rather than heavy, with medium to medium-plus body, vibrant acidity and finely woven, finessed tannins that still retain a tactile grip. Flavours of cherry, raspberry and cranberry are layered with savoury notes of leather, dried herbs and sweet spices, leading into a long, precise finish with hints of liquorice, balsamic tones and subtle undergrowth. The 2010 vintage has now developed attractive tertiary nuances while preserving freshness; it is drinking beautifully today and, under good cellaring conditions, has the potential to evolve and hold comfortably through at least 2028.
Production
The fruit for this Langhe Nebbiolo comes from vineyards in the Barbaresco area, rooted in classic Langhe soils composed primarily of calcareous marl mixed with clay and sand. This combination yields Nebbiolo with both aromatic lift and mineral tension, alongside fine structure. Farming follows traditional methods with sustainable practices to preserve biodiversity and soil health, and harvest is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe clusters. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to protect the purity and delicacy of Nebbiolo’s aromas. After fermentation, the wine is matured for about 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing slow oxygenation and textural refinement without imposing heavy oak flavour, followed by further bottle ageing before release.
Food & Serving
This 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo is a versatile partner at the table, particularly with classic Piedmontese dishes. It shines with truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, mushroom-based pastas, braised veal or beef (such as brasato al Barolo), game birds, grilled lamb and dry-aged beef. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Pecorino and well-aged Alpine cheeses. Serve at 16–18 °C; in its current, evolved phase, it benefits from a gentle decant of about 30–60 minutes to open the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially if the bottle has been stored cool for a long period.
Producer
Giuseppe Cortese is a family-run estate based in the heart of Barbaresco, long respected for its classically styled, terroir-driven Nebbiolo. Over the decades, the Cortese family has cultivated some of the appellation’s most prized hillside sites, becoming particularly associated with wines of purity, balance and longevity that faithfully reflect the region’s calcareous marl soils and cool continental climate. Their approach is firmly rooted in tradition—large Slavonian botti, patient ageing and meticulous work in the vineyards—while integrating thoughtful, sustainable practices. Today, the winery is regarded as a benchmark Barbaresco producer, with its Langhe Nebbiolo offering an accessible yet authentic window into the estate’s style and the character of the Langhe’s great Nebbiolo vineyards.
