Description

Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Feudo 2021 is a refined expression of Mount Etna’s volcanic slopes, crafted from old-vine Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. This single-cru red combines tension, elegance and depth, offering a wine that is both immediately captivating and built for the cellar. It stands out as one of the purest interpretations of Etna’s high-altitude terroir, where lava, ash and ancient vineyards shape a truly distinctive character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Feudo shows a luminous, transparent ruby hue with garnet reflections along the rim, echoing fine Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir in its delicacy of color. The nose is strikingly aromatic and precise, with notes of wild red berries, pomegranate and sour cherry lifted by rose petals, blood orange zest and hints of Mediterranean herbs. Underneath the fruit, subtle tones of volcanic ash, smoked stone, licorice and spice add complexity and a sense of place. On the palate, this Etna Rosso is taut, vertical and mineral-driven, with a finely woven structure. Juicy red cherry, cranberry and raspberry are layered with savory nuances of dried herbs, tea leaf, iron and crushed rock. The tannins are fine-grained but firm, giving a gentle grip that frames the vibrant acidity and long, saline finish. The 2021 vintage offers both freshness and concentration, suggesting very good aging potential: it should drink beautifully over the next 8–12 years, evolving toward more floral, earthy and truffly notes with time in bottle.

Production
Feudo is a single-vineyard wine sourced from high-altitude parcels on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, an area defined by steep vineyards, dramatic temperature swings and intensely volcanic soils of ash, sand and decomposed lava. The old vines of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio are typically grown in traditional alberello (bush-trained) form and harvested by hand, often in small crates to preserve freshness and fruit integrity. In the cellar, Girolamo Russo favors a minimalist, terroir-focused approach: gentle crushing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and prolonged macerations to extract fine tannin rather than heaviness. Aging usually takes place in neutral or large-format oak and/or cement, allowing the wine’s tension, aromatics and mineral spine to shine without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Feudo 2021 is extremely versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes that highlight earthy, savory flavors. Think grilled lamb chops with rosemary, roasted pork with fennel, mushroom risotto, aubergine alla Norma, or simply charcuterie and aged hard cheeses. It also works well with lighter game birds and herb-roasted chicken, where its bright acidity and fine tannins cut through richness. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in a Burgundy-style glass to emphasize its aromatics and finesse. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to let the wine open up and release its floral and mineral notes.

Producer
Girolamo Russo is one of the benchmark producers on Mount Etna, founded by Giuseppe Russo in 2005 to honor his father Girolamo and to revive the family’s historic vineyards around the village of Passopisciaro on Etna’s northern slopes. Working primarily with old vines rooted in black volcanic soils at high altitude, the estate has become synonymous with elegant, terroir-driven Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, often from single-contrada (single-cru) sites like Feudo, San Lorenzo and Feudo di Mezzo. Farming is largely organic and carried out by hand on steep terraces, reflecting a deep respect for the landscape and its traditions. In a relatively short time, Girolamo Russo has garnered international acclaim and helped cement Etna’s status as one of Italy’s most exciting and distinctive wine regions.
