Girlan Sauvignon Flora 2023

Girlan Sauvignon Flora is a bright expression of Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc, shaped by cool Alpine influences and the meticulous work of one of the region’s most respected producers. Made entirely from Sauvignon and bottled at 14.5% ABV, it combines aromatic intensity with a distinctly mineral, precise character. Founded in 1923, Girlan has long been part of South Tyrol’s winemaking heritage, and this wine reflects that legacy beautifully.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a pale straw color with vivid green reflections, hinting at its freshness and concentration. The nose is immediately expressive, with classic Sauvignon Blanc notes of nettle, elderflower, and ripe citrus, layered with herbal tones and a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, it is full-flavored and energetic, balancing generous aromatic richness with crisp acidity and a clean, stony backbone. The absence of malolactic fermentation preserves its tension and clarity, while lees aging adds texture and depth. It is enjoyable now for its freshness and perfume, but it should also age well over the next few years, gaining complexity and nuance.

Production
Girlan Sauvignon Flora comes from Alto Adige DOC in Trentino-Alto Adige, a region known for its cool nights, sunny days, and mineral-rich soils that are ideal for aromatic white wines. The grapes are harvested with care to preserve freshness and varietal character, then vinified to emphasize purity and precision. The wine is aged for eight months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks and large oak casks, without malolactic fermentation, helping retain its bright acidity and vibrant Sauvignon identity.

Food & Serving
This Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent match for asparagus, goat cheese, fresh shellfish, grilled white fish, and herb-driven dishes such as risotto with spring vegetables. It also works well with Asian-inspired cuisine and lightly spiced seafood dishes. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary.

Girlan was founded in 1923 and has grown into one of Alto Adige’s most established and admired wine cooperatives. Today, around 200 winegrowing families tend approximately 230 hectares of vineyards with a strong sense of dedication and shared purpose. The estate is particularly recognized for wines that express the character of South Tyrol’s terroir with clarity, freshness, and authenticity.
