Description
Giovanni Rosso Etna Rosso 2020 is a refined expression of Nerello Mascalese from the dramatic slopes of Sicily’s Mount Etna. Combining Burgundian finesse with volcanic intensity, this wine offers a transparent, terroir-driven profile that will appeal to lovers of elegant, mineral reds. Crafted by a renowned Barolo producer who has brought his meticulous touch to Etna, it represents a compelling intersection of two of Italy’s most exciting wine regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Etna Rosso shows a pale to medium ruby hue, reminiscent of Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo, with a luminous, slightly garnet edge. The nose is fragrant and layered, offering red cherries, wild strawberries, blood orange zest, dried rose petals and hints of Mediterranean herbs, supported by subtle spice, light smokiness and a distinctive volcanic minerality.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and finely textured, with lively, mouthwatering acidity and firm yet silky tannins. Flavours of crunchy red berries, sour cherry, pomegranate and sweet spices unfold alongside notes of graphite, crushed rock and a faint savory, almost saline edge. The finish is long, vibrant and precise, with that trademark Etna tension that keeps you reaching for another sip. Enjoyable now with a brief aeration, this vintage has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully for 6–8 years from release, gaining more complexity and savoriness over time.
Production
Sourced from high-altitude vineyards on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, Giovanni Rosso’s Etna Rosso benefits from sandy, decomposed basalt and lava soils that impart striking minerality and finesse. The cooler climate and strong diurnal temperature shifts help preserve acidity and aromatic purity in the Nerello Mascalese grapes. Harvest is typically done by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches, often from older vines with naturally low yields. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with a focus on elegance and transparency: gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentation and a thoughtful use of neutral or lightly seasoned oak (and/or large casks) allow the grape and volcanic terroir to take center stage. The result is a wine that marries Etna’s energy with the precision and restraint that Giovanni Rosso is famous for in Barolo.
Food & Serving
This Etna Rosso is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside dishes that highlight its bright acidity and fine tannins. Think grilled tuna or swordfish, charcuterie, mushroom risotto, roasted poultry, herb-crusted pork, or Mediterranean fare such as caponata, grilled vegetables and tomato-based pasta with olives and capers. It also pairs beautifully with semi-hard cheeses like Pecorino or aged Ragusano. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. A short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the aromatics open up and softens the structure, especially in its youth.
Producer
Giovanni Rosso is a family-owned estate best known for its highly regarded Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba in Piedmont, where the Rosso family has grown grapes since the late 19th century. Under the guidance of Davide Rosso, the winery has built a reputation for crafting classically styled, vineyard-driven Nebbiolo that emphasizes elegance, purity and terroir. Their move to Mount Etna represents a deliberate exploration of another noble, terroir-sensitive variety—Nerello Mascalese—in one of Italy’s most dynamic regions. Bringing Barolo-level rigor to vineyard work and winemaking on Etna, Giovanni Rosso has quickly become a noteworthy reference point for refined, site-expressive volcanic wines, further enhancing the estate’s standing on the Italian fine wine scene.
