Description
Giorgi Clilele Buttafuoco 2019 is a characterful red from Lombardy’s Oltrepò Pavese, crafted in the traditional Buttafuoco style that locals have cherished for generations. This is a bold, sun‑ripened wine that weaves together the structure of Barbera, the dark-fruited depth of Croatina and the rustic charm of local indigenous grapes. It’s a bottle that offers an authentic taste of one of Northern Italy’s most quietly distinctive red wine zones.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Giorgi Clilele Buttafuoco 2019 shows a deep ruby core with purple reflections, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum, layered with notes of dried violets, sweet spices, licorice and a gentle touch of underbrush and tobacco.
On the palate, this Buttafuoco is full-bodied and generous, with juicy dark fruit supported by lively acidity and firm, velvety tannins. Flavors of black cherry, bramble, and mulberry are lifted by hints of black pepper, cloves and a subtle balsamic edge, leading into a long, warming finish. There is enough structure and freshness here to reward several more years in the cellar, with peak drinking likely over the next 5–8 years as the tannins further integrate and the savory notes become more complex.
Production
Clilele Buttafuoco is sourced from hillside vineyards in Lombardy’s Oltrepò Pavese, where clay-limestone soils and significant diurnal shifts help preserve acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes. The traditional Buttafuoco blend typically brings together Barbera and Croatina, complemented at times by local varieties such as Uva Rara or Vespolina, each contributing their own texture and aromatic nuance. Grapes are generally harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection, then destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to capture vibrant fruit while extracting color and tannin. The wine is subsequently aged—often in a combination of stainless steel and oak—allowing it to gain depth and harmony without losing its regional freshness and drinkability.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, food-loving red that shines alongside rich, savory dishes. Pair Giorgi Clilele Buttafuoco 2019 with roast pork, grilled sausages, braised lamb, ossobuco, or hearty beef stews; it also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses, meat-based pasta dishes and mushroom risotto. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both the fruit and the spice-driven complexity. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the aromatic profile to fully open up.
