Description

Gigondas Pontillard Raspail-Ay 2023 is a characterful red from one of the southern Rhône’s most respected appellations, known for delivering generous fruit, spice, and structure. While vintage-specific details are limited, Gigondas is historically prized for producing bold, age-worthy wines with a distinctly Provençal sense of place.

Tasting Notes
Expect a deep ruby-red color with youthful purple highlights. On the nose, Gigondas typically offers ripe dark berries, garrigue herbs, black pepper, and earthy notes, often with a touch of floral lift. On the palate, the wine is usually full-bodied and layered, combining juicy blackberry and plum fruit with savory spice, firm tannins, and a warm, sun-kissed finish. The 2023 vintage should show good freshness alongside its natural richness, and it has the potential to develop further complexity with a few years of cellaring.

Production
Gigondas is shaped by a hot, dry southern Rhône terroir, where limestone, clay, and stony soils help give the wines both power and freshness. Grapes in the appellation are typically harvested by hand and vinified to preserve ripe fruit character, with traditional fermentation methods and careful extraction to balance concentration and structure.

Food & Serving
This style of wine pairs well with roasted lamb, duck, grilled sausages, braised beef, ratatouille, and dishes with Provençal herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C; decanting for 1 hour is recommended if the wine is still youthful and structured.
