Description
Bottled in an impressive 3L double magnum, Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Francia 2018 is a monumental expression of Serralunga d’Alba and one of the most collectible Nebbiolo wines from Piedmont. Still in its infancy, this Francia shows precision, purity, and a coiled energy that promises a long and fascinating evolution. For collectors and purists, it offers the chance to follow a great Barolo as it slowly unfolds over decades. The unique selling point of this wine lies in its combination of a legendary single vineyard (Francia), a benchmark traditional producer, and a long-lived, cellar‑worthy vintage. Distinctively linear and focused today, it is expected to gain breadth, volume, and aromatic complexity with time. The Francia cru has played a crucial role in defining classic Serralunga Barolo, and under Giacomo Conterno’s stewardship it has become one of the most revered names in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Barolo Francia 2018 shows a youthful, luminous garnet core with ruby reflections and the translucent hue typical of fine Nebbiolo. The robe is still tight and vivid, hinting at its age and long future ahead.
The nose is currently quite primary, with dark cherry and ripe strawberry notes leading the way. With air, more layers begin to emerge: hints of grilled herbs, blue flowers, crushed violets, and a subtle, earthy impression reminiscent of warm baked bricks and iron‑tinged soil. It’s restrained rather than exuberant at this stage, signaling a wine that is still gathering itself.
On the palate, the 2018 Francia is linear, taut, and strongly focused. The tannins are firm and fine-grained, running in a straight line from mid‑palate to a long, persistent finish. Red and dark cherry fruit is wrapped in a savory, mineral frame, with hints of dried flowers, herbs, and subtle spice. For now, it lacks the full breadth and volume it will develop, but the structure, acidity, and balance are all in place for a slow, graceful evolution.
This is a wine built for the long haul. While it can be approached after extended aeration, its true character will only emerge with time in the cellar. Expect a drinking window that begins to really open after 8–10 years from vintage, with peak maturity likely stretching 20–30 years or more from the 2018 harvest.
Production
Francia is a steep, well‑exposed cru in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most powerful and structured subzones. The marl and limestone-rich soils, combined with the cooler, breezy hilltop position, give Nebbiolo its hallmark tension, firm tannins, and mineral backbone. The vineyard’s exposure and altitude allow for slow, even ripening, preserving acidity and aromatic finesse.
Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection in the vineyard to ensure only the best Nebbiolo bunches are used. In keeping with the Giacomo Conterno philosophy, vinification is thoroughly traditional: extended maceration on the skins to extract structure and nuance, followed by a long, slow fermentation. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, where it develops complexity and integrates its formidable tannic frame without being marked by overt wood flavors. This minimal‑intervention, time‑honored approach lets the Francia terroir speak clearly and with remarkable purity.
Food & Serving
Given its structure and intensity, Barolo Francia 2018 is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes. Think braised beef or veal, osso buco, roasted lamb with herbs, game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Classic Piedmontese specialties such as brasato al Barolo, tajarin with ragù, or dishes featuring porcini and white truffle are especially harmonious.
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and keep the tannins in balance. In this youthful phase—especially from a 3L double magnum—generous aeration is essential: decant for 2–4 hours if drinking in the near term, and even longer for maximum expression. As the wine matures, shorter decanting will be sufficient to awaken its tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and dried roses.
Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the most revered names in Barolo and a global reference point for traditionally made Nebbiolo. Founded in the early 20th century and elevated to legendary status under Giovanni Conterno, the winery has long championed ageworthy, terroir‑driven Barolo crafted without compromise. The acquisition and bottling of the Francia vineyard (once known as Cascina Francia) marked a turning point, giving the domaine a flagship single‑vineyard Barolo that would help redefine Serralunga’s potential.
Today, under the continued guidance of the Conterno family, the estate remains synonymous with purity, longevity, and classical Barolo character. Their wines are consistently among the most sought-after in Piedmont, highly rated by international critics, and prized by collectors for their capacity to evolve beautifully over decades. The Barolo Francia sits alongside their fabled Monfortino as one of the region’s benchmark wines, embodying both the tradition and the prestige of Piedmontese winemaking.
