Description

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barbera d'Alba 2021 is a commanding, terroir‑driven red that shows just how serious Barbera can be in the right hands. Sourced from the famed Cerretta vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine combines intensity, precision and depth with a vibrancy that keeps every sip lifted and fresh. For those who see Barbera as an underdog grape, this is a true “vinforkæmper” – a passionate standard‑bearer for the variety at its most refined.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Cerretta Barbera d’Alba is a deep, vibrant ruby with a youthful purple rim, reflecting its energy and concentration. The nose opens with pure red and black cherry, wild berries and plum, followed by layers of violet, blood orange zest, licorice and a subtle ferrous, mineral edge typical of Serralunga. Hints of spice, dried herbs and a delicate touch of oak add complexity without ever dominating the fruit. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and finely detailed: juicy, dark cherry and ripe blackberry are framed by Barbera’s hallmark acidity, giving the wine real drive and length. The texture is polished yet firm, with mouth‑coating fruit, savory undertones and a long, mineral‑etched finish. Tannins are present but refined, more structural than rustic, making this a Barbera built for the table and the cellar. While already approachable in its youth, the 2021 has the concentration and balance to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes with time.

Production
Cerretta is a high‑quality hillside cru in Serralunga d’Alba, Piedmont, known for its calcareous clay and marl soils that give Barbera remarkable depth and a distinctly mineral backbone. Vines are tended with meticulous care, and yields are kept low to capture maximum concentration and purity of fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation traditionally takes place in large wooden vats with extended maceration to extract aroma, color and structure in a measured, balanced way. The wine is then aged in large neutral botti, allowing it to develop complexity and harmony without heavy oak imprint, preserving the vineyard’s character and the bright, natural acidity of Barbera.

Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Alba is an outstanding partner for rich, savory dishes: think tajarin with ragù, braised beef or veal, roasted lamb, game birds, or mushroom risotto with truffle. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses, charcuterie and hearty, tomato‑based recipes where its acidity cuts through richness and refreshes the palate. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. A short decant of 45–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to let the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic range; older bottles will benefit from a gentler, shorter decant just to remove sediment.

Producer
The Conterno name is legendary in Piedmont, and under the direction of Roberto Conterno, the Giacomo Conterno estate has become synonymous with some of the most revered, age‑worthy wines of Barolo. Founded in the early 20th century, the winery built its reputation on uncompromising traditionalism, meticulous vineyard work and a deep respect for classic Langhe terroirs. While best known for monumental Barolo from crus such as Francia and Monfortino, the estate’s Barbera bottlings from top sites like Cerretta have helped redefine what this grape can achieve at the highest level. Today, Giacomo Conterno stands as a benchmark producer in the region, with wines that collectors and connoisseurs worldwide seek out for their purity, precision and extraordinary capacity to age.
