Description

Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva 1988 is one of the benchmark wines of traditional Barolo and a reference point for Nebbiolo at full maturity. Produced only in exceptional vintages from the famed Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this Monfortino captures the power, structure and longevity that have made the wine a legend. The 1988 vintage, marked by warm summers and stable autumn weather, delivered perfectly ripe, concentrated grapes that have evolved into a wine of extraordinary depth and refinement over more than three decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1988 Monfortino Riserva shows a deep garnet core with a pronounced orange rim, reflecting its long and noble evolution in bottle. The colour is clear and vibrant for its age, with a brick-hued edge that signals mature Nebbiolo at its peak. The nose is intensely complex and ever-changing, offering layers of dried roses, potpourri, ripe and macerated cherries, balsamic notes, licorice, leather and undergrowth, framed by subtle earthy and mineral nuances. Hints of tar, tobacco leaf, sweet spice and truffle emerge with air, underlining the wine’s tertiary development. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a vivid, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the wine fresh and energetic despite its age. The tannins, once formidable, are now polished and finely integrated, giving a firm but velvety structure. Flavours echo the bouquet: mature red cherry, dried plum, savory spices, leather, forest floor and a distinct mineral edge that stretches into an exceptionally long, layered finish. At this stage, the 1988 is fully in its mature drinking window and shows magnificent harmony, though well-stored bottles still have the capacity to hold and evolve delicately for a few more years.

Production
The grapes for Barolo Monfortino Riserva 1988 come exclusively from the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s great crus. This steep site, with its calcareous clay soils, excellent exposure and cool nights, naturally yields low quantities of intensely flavoured Nebbiolo with firm tannins and pronounced acidity. The fruit is traditionally grown and harvested by hand to ensure only the best clusters make it into the winery. Fermentation takes place in large, open wooden vats with a long maceration of approximately 4–5 weeks, extracting profound colour, structure and aromatic depth. After fermentation, the wine is aged for around seven years in large Slavonian oak botti, where it develops slowly and steadily, before being bottled without filtration and then resting for additional decades in bottle to achieve its remarkable complexity.

Food & Serving
This mature Monfortino is a contemplative wine that shines alongside rich, savoury dishes. It pairs beautifully with classic Piemontese cuisine such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked veal shank, game birds, roast lamb, truffle risottos and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at around 18 °C, ideally in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow full aromatic expression. Given its age and natural sediment, decant gently and allow at least 4–5 hours of aeration before serving; this helps the wine fully open and reveal its intricate layers.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Barolo and a standard-bearer for traditional, long-lived Nebbiolo. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate gained international renown under Giacomo Conterno and later his son Giovanni, who firmly established Monfortino as one of the world’s greatest red wines. Based in Serralunga d’Alba, the family’s focus on uncompromising vineyard work, extended macerations and long aging in large Slavonian oak has preserved a classic style that stands apart in the region. The acquisition and meticulous farming of the Cascina Francia vineyard further cemented Conterno’s status; vintages like the 1988 Monfortino have become touchstones for collectors and critics alike, illustrating both the grandeur of Barolo and the enduring legacy of this iconic producer.
