Description
Georg Lingenfelder Morio Muskat 2022 is an expressive, skin-fermented white from one of Germany’s oldest Morio-Muskat vineyards, planted around 50 years ago in the northern Pfalz. This rare crossing of Silvaner and Gelber Muskateller is handled with a decidedly low‑intervention touch, yielding a characterful orange wine that’s both aromatic and textural. Bottled as Landwein and cryptically labeled “Gkb_CastleLane,” it quietly showcases a single limestone-rich parcel in Großkarlbacher Burgweg without ever naming it outright.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a deep golden to light amber hue, a visual cue to the four days of skin contact that define this wine’s style. The color has a gentle haziness typical of minimally filtered, low‑intervention wines, adding to its artisanal character.
The nose is immediately engaging and exotic: orange blossom, rose petals and fresh grape blossom sit alongside candied citrus peel, ripe apricot and a touch of muscaty spice. Subtle notes of dried herbs, tea leaves and a faint nuttiness from the Pfalz oak barriques weave through the aromatic profile, giving it both lift and depth.
On the palate, the wine is dry, textural and pleasantly grippy, with fine yet noticeable tannins from the extended skin contact. Juicy stone fruits, kumquat and preserved lemon are layered over a core of citrus zest and savory spice, all supported by a lively, lime-tinged acidity that keeps the wine vibrant. The limestone soils show through in a distinct mineral line and a slightly saline edge on the finish. This Morio Muskat is structured enough to stand up to rich dishes yet nimble enough to remain refreshing.
Thanks to its robust structure, natural acidity and minimal intervention approach, this 2022 vintage has solid aging potential for an aromatic variety—expect it to evolve gracefully over 4–6 years from harvest, gaining more honeyed, tea-like and nutty tones while softening its youthful aromatics and tannins.
Production
This Morio Muskat is sourced from a roughly 50‑year‑old vineyard in Großkarlbacher Burgweg, in the limestone-driven terroir of northern Pfalz. The calcareous soils and relatively cool local mesoclimate help retain freshness and aromatic intensity in this otherwise exuberant variety. All grapes are harvested by hand to ensure meticulous selection of bunches in the vineyard. After picking, the grapes are foot‑trodden and left on the skins for four days, giving the wine its orange-wine character and gentle tannic frame. Following pressing, fermentation takes place spontaneously with wild yeasts in barrique barrels made from local Pfalz oak, respecting the wine’s origin at every stage. The approach is decidedly low‑intervention: no fining, no unnecessary additives, and only a small protective dose of sulfur before bottling, resulting in a wine that is as unadorned and honest as possible.
Food & Serving
This structured, aromatic orange wine is remarkably versatile at the table. It works beautifully with intensely flavored dishes such as Middle Eastern mezze, spiced vegetable tagines, roasted root vegetables, and aromatic curries (particularly those with coconut milk or mild chili heat). It also shines with charcuterie, semi-hard cheeses, washed-rind cheeses, and rich poultry or game birds with herbal seasonings. For seafood, try it with grilled octopus, saffron-infused fish stews or miso-glazed cod, where its tannin and acidity can cut through richness. Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12 °C (50–54 °F), to balance freshness with aromatic complexity. A gentle decant of 20–30 minutes helps the wine open up, softening the initial grip and bringing forward the floral and spice notes.
Producer
Weingut Lingenfelder is a family-run estate in the northern Pfalz, known for its characterful, terroir-driven wines and a long-standing commitment to expressing the individuality of each site. Under the guidance of Georg Lingenfelder, the estate has embraced a low‑intervention philosophy, particularly in select parcels like this old-vine Morio Muskat in Großkarlbacher Burgweg. In a region better known internationally for Riesling, Lingenfelder stands out for championing lesser-known varieties and traditional methods such as hand harvesting, foot-treading and spontaneous fermentation.
