Description
Galia Villages 2016 Magnum is a bold yet refined red from Castilla y León, crafted by Jérôme Bougnaud in collaboration with El Regajal. Sourced largely from Ribera del Duero and nearby old vineyards just beyond the official boundary, it captures both regional character and a quietly historic sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby color that hints at its concentration and depth. The nose opens with violet, ripe cherry, floral notes, and a subtle lift of spice and eucalyptus.
On the palate, it is full-bodied but beautifully balanced, with a silky texture, polished tannins, and vibrant acidity carrying the wine with ease. Flavors of mature red berries, pepper, and clove lead into a long, aromatic finish with an elegant mineral edge. The 2016 vintage has the structure and freshness to age gracefully for several years, developing added complexity over time.
Production
The wine comes from six small parcels of nearly centenarian vines planted at 800 to 1,000 meters above sea level on limestone clay and gravel soils. Fermentation is done with native yeasts, using a mix of whole clusters and destemmed grapes, followed by a long maceration to build depth and complexity. Aging takes place over 21 months in a combination of French barriques and larger foudres, with only about 15% new oak to preserve the purity of the fruit and the balance of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, grilled beef, game, braised short ribs, or hearty mushroom dishes. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening now, especially in magnum format, to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.
Producer
Galia Villages was created by Jérôme Bougnaud together with El Regajal, bringing a thoughtful and terroir-driven approach to Castilla y León. The project is rooted in old-vine sources and careful cellar work, aiming to highlight the depth and elegance of the region rather than heavy extraction. It has earned recognition for producing wines that are both authentic and polished, with a strong sense of place.
