Description
Galia Villages 2016 is a bold yet refined red from Castilla y León, created by Jérôme Bougnaud in collaboration with El Regajal. Made from fruit drawn largely from Ribera del Duero, with a small selection from old vineyards just beyond the official boundary, it captures both depth and restraint in a style that reflects the character of some of Spain’s most prized hillside sites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby colour. The nose opens with violet, ripe cherry and floral notes, layered with a seductive touch of spice and eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied but beautifully balanced, with a silky texture, polished tannins and bright acidity. The finish is long and aromatic, shaped by ripe red berries, pepper, clove and a refined mineral edge. With its structure and freshness, it should develop nicely over the next several years.
Production
Galia Villages 2016 comes from six small parcels of nearly century-old vines planted at 800 to 1,000 metres above sea level on calcareous clay and gravel soils. The blend is based mainly on Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), with Garnacha and a small amount of Albillo adding nuance and lift. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, using a mix of whole clusters and destemmed grapes, followed by a long maceration and 21 months of ageing in French barriques and larger foudres, with only around 15% new oak to preserve purity and site expression.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, grilled game, slow-cooked beef, Iberian pork and mature hard cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if opening the wine in its younger years, to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open up.
Producer
Galia was founded by Jérôme Bougnaud with El Regajal, bringing together thoughtful winemaking and a strong focus on old-vine fruit from Castilla y León. The project has earned a reputation for producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that bridge power and elegance, and Galia Villages stands out as one of its most distinctive cuvées.
