Description
Gaja Langhe Sito Moresco 2023 is a refined, modern red from one of Piemonte’s most iconic producers, blending Nebbiolo, Barbera and Merlot into a seamless, elegant whole. Designed to be approachable in its youth yet capable of short- to mid-term aging, it offers the structure of Nebbiolo wrapped in the plush fruit of Barbera and Merlot. Named after the historic Sito Moresco vineyard, this wine bridges Gaja’s great Barbaresco heritage with a more contemporary, international style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sito Moresco 2023 shows a bright ruby-red color with purplish highlights at the rim, reflecting its youthful energy. The nose opens with fresh red cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry coulis, followed by rose petals, violets and a touch of sweet spice. Subtle notes of cedar, licorice and a faint hint of graphite add complexity as the wine aerates.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, vibrant and precise, with Nebbiolo’s fine, chalky tannins framed by Barbera’s juicy acidity and Merlot’s soft, rounded texture. Flavors of red currant, cherry and plum are layered with hints of cranberry, dried herbs, tobacco and a gentle vanilla-spice from oak aging. The finish is clean and persistent, marked by lifted acidity and a delicate mineral edge. While already enjoyable in its youth, the 2023 vintage should evolve gracefully over the next 6–8 years, gaining further aromatic complexity and polish.
Production
Sito Moresco is sourced from estate vineyards in the Langhe hills of Piemonte, including parcels in the Barbaresco area where calcareous clay and marl soils give structure, elegance and aromatic lift. The grapes—Nebbiolo, Barbera and Merlot—are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches and optimal ripeness. Each variety is vinified separately, typically undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel to preserve purity of fruit, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in oak barriques (predominantly used) for several months to a year, allowing the components to integrate and soften before blending and bottling, resulting in a polished yet terroir-driven Langhe Rosso.
Food & Serving
Gaja Langhe Sito Moresco 2023 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes such as vitello tonnato, beef carpaccio, roasted chicken, grilled lamb chops, mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, charcuterie and medium-aged cheeses like Taleggio or Asiago. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic delicacy and textural finesse. For best expression, especially in its first few years, decant for 30–45 minutes to soften the tannins and allow the floral and red-fruit notes to fully emerge.
Producer
The Gaja estate, founded in 1859 in Barbaresco, is widely regarded as one of Italy’s most influential and visionary wine producers. Under the leadership of Angelo Gaja, the winery helped redefine the reputation of Barbaresco and the Langhe, pioneering meticulous vineyard work, lower yields and the sensitive use of barriques. Gaja’s wines have become benchmarks for modern Italian fine wine, consistently earning high international acclaim and helping to put Piemonte firmly on the world stage. Sito Moresco reflects the estate’s innovative spirit—melding native and international varieties—while remaining deeply rooted in the region’s distinctive terroir.
