Description
Gaja Chardonnay Langhe 2021 is a refined, barrel‑aged Piedmont white that showcases the elegance and precision for which the Gaja family is renowned. Crafted primarily from historic Chardonnay parcels in Treiso and Serralunga d’Alba, this wine balances richness with a luminous freshness and mineral drive. As one of the region’s benchmark Chardonnays, it illustrates how an international grape can express the subtleties of Langhe’s hillsides when handled with great care and restraint.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Chardonnay Langhe is a bright, pale straw with subtle golden highlights, reflecting both youth and concentration. The nose opens with lifted notes of white peach and ripe citrus—think lemon zest and mandarin—layered over hints of acacia blossom, crushed stone, and a gentle, creamy oak nuance.
On the palate, the wine is at once explosive and finely etched: vibrant stone fruit, citrus and green apple are wrapped in a sleek, creamy texture that never feels heavy. Subtle tones of toasted hazelnut and vanilla are very well integrated, allowing the core of fruit and minerality to remain center stage. A clean, saline finish and precise acidity give length and energy, suggesting that while enjoyable now, this vintage will reward a few more years of cellaring. Expect a graceful evolution over 8–10 years, with the fruit giving way to deeper honeyed, nutty and brioche notes over time.
Production
The Chardonnay for this wine comes from around ten hectares of hillside vineyards in the Langhe, with five hectares planted in Treiso in 1979 and another five in Serralunga d’Alba in 1989. These are classic Piedmont slopes, with calcareous clay and marl soils that naturally limit yields and enhance both structure and minerality in the fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and aromatics. After gentle pressing and fermentation, the wine is matured predominantly in large, traditional botti (around 60%) with the remainder in smaller oak barrels (about 40%), for 12 to 18 months. This careful balance of vessel size and aging time is designed to build a creamy mouthfeel and complexity while keeping the oak influence subtle and the high‑toned fruit and mineral notes clearly defined. As vines from Gaja’s newer Alta Langa property gain age, select fruit will be incorporated to further emphasize lift and tension in the blend.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay’s combination of texture, energy and fine oak makes it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, or butter‑poached turbot, as well as creamy risottos, roast chicken with herbs, and refined vegetable preparations like sautéed mushrooms or cauliflower gratin. It also works well with soft, bloomy‑rind cheeses and delicate cow’s milk cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little in advance, helps the wine unfold its layers, especially in its youth.
