Description
Fratelli Alessandria’s Barbera d'Alba Superiore Priora is a polished expression of Piemonte’s classic grape, showing the depth, freshness, and structure that have made Barbera one of the region’s most admired red wines. Produced by a historic Verduno estate founded in 1870, it combines careful fruit selection with thoughtful ageing to deliver both charm and complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright ruby-red colour. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe fruit, fine spices, earthy nuances, a touch of musk, and subtle tobacco notes.
On the palate, it is vibrant and fresh, with Barbera’s naturally lively acidity giving the wine lift and energy. The finish is long and spicy, supported by the complexity gained through ageing. While already expressive, it should continue to gain nuance over the next few years.
Production
This Barbera d'Alba Superiore is made from 100% Barbera grown in Piemonte, where the variety thrives in the region’s well-suited vineyards. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless steel at a controlled 29–31°C for 10–12 days, preserving purity of fruit while extracting colour and structure. The wine is then aged for 12–14 months in small French oak barrels and/or French or Slavonian oak casks, followed by two months in steel and at least two months in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine with richly flavoured dishes such as roasted pork, braised veal, grilled sausages, mushroom-based pasta, and aged cheeses. It is best enjoyed at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes can help open up its aromatic complexity and soften the oak influence.
