Description
Fratelli Alessandria Barbera d'Alba Superiore Priora 2022 is a richly expressive Piedmont red that shows how much depth and finesse Barbera can achieve in the right hands. Produced by one of Verduno’s historic estates, founded in 1870, it combines ripe fruit, lifted freshness, and refined oak complexity in a style that feels both classic and polished.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vivid ruby-red color. The nose opens with layers of fruit and fine spice, followed by earthy nuances of musk and humus, with subtle hints of tobacco adding extra depth.
On the palate, the wine is marked by a pleasing freshness and a generous, well-structured mouthfeel. The finish is long and spicy, with the oak aging bringing added complexity without overpowering the varietal character. With its balance of fruit, acidity, and tannin, it should develop gracefully over the next few years.
Production
Made from 100% Barbera grown in Piedmont, this Barbera d'Alba Superiore is crafted with careful grape selection to highlight the quality of the terroir. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of 29–31°C for 10–12 days, preserving purity of fruit while building structure. The wine is then aged for 12–14 months in small French oak barrels and/or French or Slavonian oak casks, followed by two months in steel and at least two months in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich pasta dishes, braised meats, roasted poultry, mushroom-based recipes, and aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C to best show its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially if enjoyed relatively young, to help the aromas open up and soften the oak nuances.
