Description
Franz Keller Drei Dörfer Chardonnay 2023 is a refined, terroir-driven white wine that captures the cool precision of modern Baden Chardonnay. Sourced from the villages of Achkarren, Jechtingen, and Schelingen, it brings together energy, mineral tension, and structural elegance in a style that feels both distinctly German and quietly Burgundian.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, focused profile with a subtle reductive edge. Expect aromas of flint, struck match, wet limestone, Amalfi lemon, quince, yellow apple, a hint of unripe apricot, and delicate notes of lemongrass and nuts.
The palate is taut, vibrant, and deeply mineral, with salt-driven citrus, herbal freshness, and ultra-fine tannins giving the wine impressive length and linearity. This is a serious Chardonnay built for complexity, and it should develop beautifully over the next 8–15 years.
Production
The grapes come from three Baden villages, with much of the fruit sourced from highly regarded parcels on volcanic and limestone-rich soils. These terroirs contribute the wine’s saline minerality, freshness, and elegant structure.
The wine is fermented in barriques and matured for about a year in oak, followed by additional ageing on fine lees in stainless steel. This approach preserves purity and precision while allowing the fruit and site expression to remain at the forefront rather than the oak.
Food & Serving
Serve at 10–12 °C. It pairs especially well with grilled fish, shellfish in creamy sauces, light poultry dishes, risotto, mushroom-based recipes, and firm cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if enjoyed young.
Producer
Franz Keller is one of Baden’s most respected producers, known for wines that combine craftsmanship, clarity, and a strong sense of place. The estate has built a reputation for elegant, terroir-focused whites and reds, with a style that often draws comparisons to Burgundy while remaining firmly rooted in Baden. Its commitment to quality has made it a benchmark name in the region.
