Description

Franz Gojer’s Glögglhof St. Magdalener Classico 2022 is a beautifully authentic expression of one of Alto Adige’s most traditional red wines. Crafted from Vernatsch (Trollinger) with a dash of Lagrein, it combines effortless drinkability with surprising depth and structure. This cuvée comes from the historic St. Magdalener hillside above Bolzano, a site long celebrated for producing some of the most characterful, food‑friendly reds of Trentino‑Südtirol.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 shows a bright, medium ruby color with a delicate translucence typical of Vernatsch, yet a touch deeper thanks to the Lagrein component. The nose is inviting and precise: dark red fruits such as sour cherry and red plum mingle with violet, subtle spice, and a hint of dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is dry, vibrant and finely structured, with juicy red and black cherry fruit taking center stage. A silky tannin profile and lively acidity keep it wonderfully drinkable, while a fine, gently bitter note on the finish adds grip and complexity. The mid‑weight body makes it both charming and serious, with a long, harmonious aftertaste. While already appealing in its youth, this St. Magdalener Classico can develop further nuance over 3–6 years, gaining in aromatic complexity while retaining its freshness.

Production
The grapes for Glögglhof St. Magdalener Classico are sourced from steep, sun‑drenched vineyards on the St. Magdalener hill above Bolzano in Trentino‑Südtirol. Here, poor, well‑drained porphyry and gravel soils, combined with significant day‑night temperature swings, give naturally low yields and intensely aromatic fruit. Vernatsch forms the backbone of the blend, complemented by a portion of Lagrein for color, structure, and spice. Harvest is typically performed by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection of the bunches. In the cellar, Franz Gojer favors a gentle, traditional vinification in stainless steel and large neutral casks: controlled fermentation to preserve fruit purity, followed by a moderate period of maturation that smooths the tannins while maintaining the wine’s freshness and clarity of terroir.

Food & Serving
This St. Magdalener Classico is a highly versatile food wine, equally at home with rustic alpine dishes and modern cuisine. It pairs beautifully with hearty pastas (such as pasta with Jerusalem artichoke or mushroom ragù), grilled or roasted white meats, speck and cured sausages, roast chicken, pork dishes, and semi‑aged alpine cheeses. Its fresh acidity and fine tannins also make it a smart choice for lighter game or earthy vegetable dishes. Serve at 14–16 °C, slightly cooler than many full‑bodied reds, to highlight its aromatics and lift. A brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, but extended decanting is not necessary.

Producer
Glögglhof is the family estate of Franz Gojer, one of the benchmark producers for St. Magdalener and a key figure in the qualitative renaissance of Vernatsch in Alto Adige. Nestled on the slopes above Bolzano, the estate has long cultivated vineyards in some of the appellation’s most prized parcels, combining traditional know‑how with a clear focus on precision, low yields, and terroir expression. Over the years, Gojer’s wines have helped redefine St. Magdalener from a simple everyday red into a serious, characterful wine capable of nuance and aging. Frequently praised by the German and Italian wine press, the domaine is widely regarded as a reference point in the region for authentic, finely made, site‑driven reds.
