Description

Franz Gojer’s Glögglhof Lagrein Riserva 2022 is a deeply expressive red from some of South Tyrol’s most coveted sites around Bolzano: Gries, St. Magdalena and Bozner Boden. This Riserva showcases Lagrein in its most refined, concentrated form, uniting alpine precision with Mediterranean warmth. Long a benchmark for the variety, Gojer’s Riserva offers a modern, polished take on one of Alto Adige’s oldest native grapes.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Lagrein Riserva 2022 is intensely colored – a near-opaque, dark ruby to purple with a youthful, vibrant rim. The nose is generous and layered, opening with ripe blackberry and black cherry, followed by nuances of fresh blueberry tart and dark chocolate mousse. With air, subtler, savory notes emerge: warm brioche and buttered pretzel, hints of polished leather, dried rosemary and a gentle touch of pipe tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and mouthcoating, with a high extract that gives it a pleasantly chewy texture. The tannins are supple and fine-grained, wrapping around the dark fruit without ever feeling harsh, while the well-judged acidity – softened by malolactic fermentation – keeps everything lifted and flowing. The finish is warm, rounded and long, with lingering impressions of black fruits, cocoa and subtle toasted spice. Enjoyable now with proper aeration, this 2022 Riserva has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 8–10 years in a good cellar.

Production
The Lagrein Riserva is sourced exclusively from top parcels in Gries, St. Magdalena and Bozner Boden, sites known for their warm exposures and distinctive porphyry soils of the Eisack Valley. This volcanic rock stores heat, allowing Lagrein to ripen fully while still retaining freshness – a key to the wine’s intensity and balance. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of barriques and large wooden casks, a regime that enhances structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. This mixed oak aging brings the subtle notes of brioche, buttered pretzel, leather, herbs and tobacco that weave so seamlessly into the wine’s dark, concentrated core.

Food & Serving
This Lagrein Riserva is a superb partner for hearty, flavor-packed dishes: think braised beef or venison, slow-cooked lamb shanks, rich stews, or game birds with roasted root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged mountain cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, and deeply flavored risottos or pastas with ragù. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large-bowled glasses to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s layered complexity.

Producer
Glögglhof, run by Franz Gojer and family, is one of the reference estates in St. Magdalena above Bolzano in Trentino–Südtirol, renowned for giving traditional local varieties a precise, terroir-driven voice. Long respected for its elegant Schiava (Vernatsch) and increasingly celebrated for its characterful Lagrein, the estate combines meticulous vineyard work with a sensitive, low-intervention approach in the cellar. Gojer’s wines are frequently cited among the finest expressions of their appellations, helping to cement Alto Adige’s reputation as a source of distinctive, ageworthy alpine reds that stand comfortably alongside more famous Italian regions.
