Description
Francoise Bedel Champagne Origin'elle Extra Brut is a vibrant, characterful grower Champagne that captures the soul of the Marne Valley through its starring grape, Pinot Meunier. Crafted with minimal dosage and a strong respect for nature, this cuvée balances roundness and precision, making it both approachable and distinctly artisanal. It’s an emblematic wine for the estate, conceived as the purest expression of Bedel’s style and of her organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards in Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Origin'elle Extra Brut typically shows a bright, pale gold hue with a fine, persistent bead of bubbles that speaks to careful, traditional-method aging. The nose is generous yet refined, revealing ripe orchard fruits—pear, apple, and yellow plum—intertwined with notes of citrus zest, white flowers, and subtle brioche and hazelnut from extended lees contact.
On the palate, Pinot Meunier leads with its trademark roundness and softness, delivering a fleshy core of stone and orchard fruits, while Chardonnay brings lift, tension, and minerality, and Pinot Noir adds a gentle backbone and structure. The Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine linear and fresh, highlighting chalky, saline nuances and a clean, mouthwatering finish. While very enjoyable now for its energy and balance, this Champagne can evolve gracefully over 3–6 years, developing more complexity, creaminess, and autolytic notes with time in bottle.
Production
Origin'elle is sourced primarily from estate vineyards in the Champagne region, with a strong focus on the Marne Valley’s clay-limestone and sandy-limestone soils that particularly favor Pinot Meunier. Françoise Bedel is known for her commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, encouraging deep root systems and healthy soils to translate terroir clearly into the glass. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and natural concentration. After gentle pressing, the base wines ferment—often with indigenous yeasts—before undergoing secondary fermentation in bottle following the traditional Champagne method. Extended aging on the lees builds texture, complexity, and finesse, and the wine is finished with a very low (Extra Brut) dosage to let its natural balance and mineral backbone shine.
Food & Serving
This Extra Brut Champagne pairs beautifully with refined yet simple dishes that echo its blend of roundness and freshness: think oysters, scallop crudo, sushi, and sashimi, as well as lightly grilled fish, poached chicken, or a classic cheese and charcuterie board featuring soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert. It’s also a lovely companion to vegetable-based dishes such as asparagus risotto or seasonal salads with citrus or nuts. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its tension and aromatics. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a quick, gentle splash into a small decanter can help the wine open up, especially if you’re serving it with more complex dishes.
