Description
Franck Bonville Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Pur Oger Extra Brut Millésime 2018 is a single-village expression of Chardonnay from one of the Côte des Blancs’ most revered terroirs. Crafted exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in Oger, this Extra Brut cuvée showcases crystalline precision, chalky depth, and the finesse that has made Bonville a benchmark for grower Champagne. The 2018 vintage, generous yet beautifully balanced, gives this wine both immediate appeal and the structure to evolve gracefully.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Pur Oger 2018 shows a pale, luminous gold color with fine, persistent bubbles forming an elegant, silky mousse. The nose is pure and lifted, opening with notes of lemon zest, white flowers, and green apple, layered with chalky minerality, freshly baked brioche, and a hint of almond and citrus blossom.
On the palate, this Champagne is taut, vertical, and finely etched, driven by vivid Chardonnay acidity and the saline imprint of Oger’s chalk. Flavors of ripe citrus, white peach, crisp pear, and grapefruit peel are interwoven with subtle hazelnut, pastry cream, and wet stone. The Extra Brut dosage keeps the wine dry and incisive, emphasizing precision over opulence. The finish is long, mouthwatering, and mineral, with a delicate, lingering chalkiness. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, it has solid aging potential over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity, creaminess, and more pronounced brioche and nutty notes with time in bottle.
Production
Pur Oger is sourced exclusively from Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards in the village of Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. Here, pure chalk soils and a cool, northerly climate give grapes intense freshness, high natural acidity, and a distinct saline minerality. The fruit is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve both precision and aromatic clarity. In the cellar, Franck Bonville vinifies parcel by parcel, using temperature-controlled fermentation to retain freshness and detail. The wine is then matured on its lees in bottle for an extended period to build texture, complexity, and fine mousse before disgorgement and the addition of a low Extra Brut dosage, allowing the character of the Grand Cru terroir of Oger and the 2018 vintage to shine through.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is a superb match for elegant, clean-flavored dishes. Think oysters, scallops carpaccio, langoustines, sushi and sashimi, caviar, or simply prepared white fish with a citrus or beurre blanc sauce. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese, fresh cheeses, and light poultry dishes or fine vegetable starters such as asparagus or fennel. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A short decant in a chilled carafe or allowing the wine to open in the glass for 10–15 minutes will help the aromatics and texture unfurl, especially if enjoyed within a few years of release.
