Description
Fontanafredda Moscato d'Asti Moncucco 2024 is a gently sparkling, sweet Piedmontese classic that captures the magic of the Langhe hills in a single glass. Crafted from Moscato Bianco (Moscato Reale) grown on the famed Moncucco hillside, it offers lifted aromatics, refined sweetness and remarkable freshness. The label’s “M” flames pay tribute to the bonfires of Langhe folklore, symbolising both the changing seasons and Fontanafredda’s mission to reframe Moscato as a wine with true depth and aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Moncucco 2024 shows a bright, pale straw-yellow colour with silvery reflections and a fine, persistent perlage. The mousse is delicate rather than frothy, underscoring the wine’s elegance and balance.
The nose is intensely aromatic and expressive, with layers of fresh white peach, ripe pear, orange blossom, elderflower and acacia honey, supported by hints of sage, lemon zest and crushed grapes. On the palate it is lusciously sweet yet beautifully light, with a silky, gently creamy texture carried by vibrant, tangy acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, lychee and honeyed citrus unfold alongside floral and herbal nuances, finishing clean, lifted and moreish at low alcohol. While designed to be enjoyed in its youth for maximum aromatic brightness, top Moscato d’Asti from sites like Moncucco can develop surprising complexity over 3–5 years, gaining notes of candied citrus, acacia honey and dried flowers while retaining its core freshness.
Production
The Moncucco vineyard sits on the rolling hills of Piedmont’s Langhe, in the heart of Moscato d’Asti country, where calcareous marl and sandy soils, steep exposures and a wide diurnal temperature range help preserve perfume and acidity in the Moscato Bianco grapes. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in the cool early hours to protect their delicate aromatics, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters make it to the cellar. After a gentle pressing, the must is clarified at low temperature and kept chilled until fermentation, which is carried out slowly in pressurised tanks (Charmat/Martinotti method) to retain primary fruit and natural sweetness. Fermentation is deliberately stopped by cooling before all sugars are converted to alcohol, yielding a lightly sparkling (frizzante), low-alcohol dessert wine that captures the grape’s pure, floral character.
Food & Serving
This Moscato d’Asti is a natural partner for fruit-driven and delicately sweet desserts: think fresh berry tarts, lemon sorbet, panna cotta, pavlova, peach cobbler, or classic Italian pastries such as panettone and colomba. It also works beautifully with blue cheeses, mild goat cheese, or a simple plate of ripe peaches and apricots. Serve well-chilled at around 6–8°C (43–46°F) to highlight its perfume and refreshing sparkle. Decanting is not recommended; instead, open just before serving and pour gently into tulip-shaped white wine or sparkling wine glasses to focus the aromas and preserve the fine bubbles.
