Description

Fattoria San Lorenzo Burello 2018 is a characterful red from the rolling hills of Italy’s Marche region, crafted for drinkers who enjoy authenticity over flash. This is a thoughtfully made, artisanal wine that captures the wild, slightly untamed soul of the Adriatic countryside. Expect a wine with depth, energy and a distinctly Italian sense of place. Built around traditional Marche red varieties, typically led by Montepulciano and Sangiovese, Burello stands out for its combination of rustic charm and precision. Fattoria San Lorenzo has long championed low-intervention farming and honest winemaking, and Burello reflects that philosophy in the glass: expressive, unpolished in the best possible way, and true to its vintage and terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Fattoria San Lorenzo Burello 2018 shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections developing toward the rim, hinting that the wine is beginning to move into a beautifully expressive drinking window. Swirl the glass and you’ll notice good viscosity and a lively, almost nervous color that suggests both concentration and freshness. The nose is generous yet nuanced, with ripe red and dark cherry, wild plum and blackberry layered over dried herbs, leather, tobacco leaf and a touch of forest floor. Subtle notes of violet, black pepper, licorice and a faint balsamic edge add complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a firm but ripe tannin structure, offering flavors of black cherry, sour cherry, bramble fruit and a savory, earthy core. There’s a refreshing line of acidity typical of Marche reds that keeps everything lifted and food-friendly, while hints of dried Mediterranean herbs, spice and a gentle, smoky nuance linger on the finish. The 2018 vintage drinks very well now, but has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5–8 years, softening its tannins and bringing more tertiary notes of leather, dried fruit and undergrowth to the foreground.

Production
Burello is sourced from Fattoria San Lorenzo’s estate vineyards in Marche, where the vines grow on rolling hills with clay-limestone soils influenced by both the Apennine mountains and the nearby Adriatic Sea. This mix of altitude, cooling breezes and mineral-rich soils gives naturally moderate yields and excellent ripening conditions, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. The grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow careful selection of bunches and to ensure they arrive at the cellar in perfect condition. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in traditional vessels, often on the skins for an extended maceration to extract color, tannin and complexity. Aging usually takes place in a combination of older barrels and/or large casks, allowing the wine to evolve gently without being dominated by new oak, so that the character of the fruit and terroir remains front and center.

Food & Serving
Fattoria San Lorenzo Burello 2018 is a natural fit for hearty, rustic dishes and classic Italian fare. Think slow-cooked ragù over fresh pasta, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, roast pork with fennel, or a rich sausage and mushroom pizza. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino, mature hard cheeses, charcuterie and dishes featuring tomato, herbs and olive oil. For optimal enjoyment, serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 30–60 minutes helps the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the complex aromatics to fully express themselves, especially if the bottle has been stored cool.

Producer
Fattoria San Lorenzo is a family-run estate in Marche, known for its commitment to organic, often biodynamic-inspired farming and minimal-intervention winemaking. Over the years, the estate has built a strong reputation among wine lovers for producing distinctive, terroir-driven wines that showcase the unique character of this often-overlooked region. By focusing on indigenous varieties and traditional methods, Fattoria San Lorenzo has become one of the reference producers in Marche, earning critical praise and a loyal following for both its whites and reds. Burello is part of this philosophy: a wine that speaks clearly of its origins, crafted by a producer who values authenticity, biodiversity and a deep respect for the land.
