Description
Fattoria Lornano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2017 represents the pinnacle of Sangiovese from this historic Tuscan estate. Crafted only in the best vintages and from the winery’s finest parcels, this Gran Selezione offers depth, elegance and an unmistakable Chianti Classico identity. It’s a wine that bridges tradition and modern precision, expressing both the character of the Lornano vineyards and the pedigree of the Gran Selezione designation, the highest tier in the Chianti Classico hierarchy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2017 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet reflections toward the rim, hinting at some evolution while retaining youthful intensity. The nose opens with ripe red cherries and blackberries, followed by dried violets, Tuscan herbs, and subtle notes of tobacco, cedar, and sweet spices from careful barrel aging.
On the palate, it is structured yet finely textured, with juicy red and black cherry fruit at the core, supported by polished tannins and a fresh, mouthwatering acidity that is quintessentially Sangiovese. Layers of savory nuances—dried herbs, leather, a touch of balsamic and earthy minerality—unfold with air, leading to a long, persistent finish. The 2017 vintage is already enjoyable but still has the backbone to evolve further; properly cellared, it should continue to develop complexity over the next 8–10 years.
Production
The grapes for Lornano’s Chianti Classico Gran Selezione are sourced from the estate’s prime vineyards in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone in Toscana, where galestro and alberese soils, rolling hills and a balanced climate create ideal conditions for Sangiovese. Yields are kept low to ensure concentration, with grapes typically harvested by hand to allow strict selection of only the healthiest, ripest clusters. In the cellar, the wine is vinified traditionally with temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and fine tannins, followed by a lengthy maturation in oak and bottle to achieve the depth, harmony and complexity required of a Gran Selezione.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2017 pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan cuisine: bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef, lamb dishes, and rich ragù over pappardelle or tagliatelle. It also complements game birds, roasted pork, aged Pecorino and other mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and elegant structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially while the wine is still relatively young, to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften.
