Fattoria Le Pupille, Toscana Syrah Le Pupille 2018

Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the true pioneers of Maremma, the southern part of Tuscany, and a name closely associated with expressive red wines of real character. The Le Pupille name refers to the two farmhouses perched on the hilltops above the medieval village of Pereta, watching over the landscape like “eyes” that have long become part of the estate’s identity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2018 Toscana Syrah shows a deep, intense ruby colour that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and complex, with black pepper, liquorice, cocoa and a distinctive leather note that recalls traditional Tuscan tanneries. On the palate, it surprises with freshness and elegance, balancing its full body with poise and energy. Spicy, slightly exotic flavours unfold across a long, satisfying finish, making this a Syrah with both immediate appeal and the structure to age gracefully for several years.

Production
Fattoria Le Pupille is based in the Maremma terroir, where warm Tuscan sunshine and coastal influence help shape wines with ripeness, lift and aromatic depth. The estate has grown into a modern, ambitious winery under Elisabetta Geppetti, now working across 75 hectares of vineyards spread like a mosaic through some of the region’s finest sites. While the estate is best known for Sangiovese and its iconic Morellino wines, this Syrah reflects the same meticulous approach and winemaking ambition that helped put Maremma on the international map.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile red for flavourful dishes such as grilled lamb, beef tenderloin, game, roast duck or slow-cooked Tuscan-style stews. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses and richly seasoned mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for around 30–60 minutes if you want the aromatic complexity and structure to open up fully.

A pioneer in Maremma, the estate has played a major role in elevating the region’s reputation for premium red wine, most famously through the launch of Saffredi in 1987. Today, it remains an important benchmark producer, recognised for quality, innovation and its deep connection to the Tuscan landscape.
