Description

Fattoria Le Pupille Poggio Valente 2018 is a single-vineyard Sangiovese from the wild, sun-drenched hills of southern Tuscany’s Maremma. This is a poised, elegant red that captures both the refinement of great Tuscan Sangiovese and the untamed character of its coastal terroir. Offered in full cases of six, it’s a cellar‑worthy choice for collectors and lovers of structured, age‑worthy Italian reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Poggio Valente 2018 shows a vibrant, medium‑deep ruby hue with garnet reflections beginning to emerge at the rim. The nose opens with pure red cherry and wild forest berries, joined by notes of blueberry, wild rose, and a subtle hint of dried violets. As it breathes, more complex layers appear: sweet baking spices, a touch of mild tobacco, and a whisper of underbrush and cedar from its time in oak. On the palate, this is a finely cut, focused Sangiovese with a classical Tuscan profile. Juicy cherry and woodland berry fruit sit at the core, framed by lively acidity and polished yet firm tannins that promise excellent development in bottle. The wild Maremma character shows in a savoury, slightly earthy edge and a lingering, spicy finish. While already harmonious, the wine is still gathering depth and texture; it will benefit from several more years of aging, with an ideal drinking window of roughly 2024–2030 and beyond, depending on your preference for freshness versus tertiary complexity.

Production
Poggio Valente is sourced from a high‑quality hillside vineyard in the Maremma zone of southern Tuscany, where warm days, cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, and well‑drained, mixed sandy and clay-limestone soils create an ideal environment for Sangiovese. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches reach the winery. After careful sorting, the must undergoes temperature‑controlled fermentation and maceration to extract aroma, colour, and fine tannins without sacrificing elegance. The wine is then matured—principally in French oak barriques and/or tonneaux—for an extended period, allowing the primary fruit to knit with subtle spice, tobacco and structural refinement before bottling.

Food & Serving
This vintage is an excellent partner for classic Tuscan cuisine and other flavourful Mediterranean dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, roast pork with herbs, game birds, or rich pasta with ragù di cinghiale (wild boar). It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino, hard cheeses, and mushroom‑based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; as it ages and softens in bottle, a shorter decant or simply opening in advance will be sufficient.

Producer
Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the benchmark estates of the Maremma in southern Tuscany, founded and driven to prominence by Elisabetta Geppetti, often described as the “signora del Morellino.” Starting in the 1980s, she helped transform the region from a rustic, little‑known area into a source of some of Tuscany’s most exciting and characterful reds. Poggio Valente is among the estate’s flagship crus, showcasing the pure expression of Sangiovese in this coastal terroir. With a track record of high critical acclaim and a reputation for age‑worthy, finely crafted wines, Fattoria Le Pupille has become a reference point not only for Maremma, but for modern Tuscan winemaking as a whole.
