Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma Saffredi 2020

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi 2020 is one of Maremma’s landmark reds, a wine that helped put southern Tuscany on the fine-wine map when it was first released in 1987. Crafted with a Bordeaux-inspired blend and the precision of a top Tuscan estate, it combines power, elegance, and a distinctly Mediterranean sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Saffredi 2020 shows a deep, concentrated colour that hints at its ripe fruit core and serious structure. The nose opens with aromas of red fruit, red berries, blackberry, and a layered spice profile of clove, cinnamon, and chocolate. On the palate it is rounded, velvety, and beautifully balanced, with supple tannins and a long, persistent finish. As the wine evolves, the spice becomes more pronounced, adding complexity and depth. It has excellent aging potential and should continue to gain nuance over time.

Production
The grapes come from the Saffredi vineyard in Pereta, at about 250 metres above sea level, with southwest exposure for the older vines and southeast for the newer plantings. The soils are mainly sandstone with very little organic matter or clay, creating naturally low-yielding conditions that help concentrate flavour. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, with harvest typically taking place from mid-September for Merlot through to mid-October for Petit Verdot.

Food & Serving
Saffredi 2020 is an excellent match for red meat, game, and rich roasted dishes, and it also pairs beautifully with dark chocolate. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if enjoying it young to allow the aromatics and texture to open fully.
