Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma Saffredi 2020

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi is one of Maremma’s benchmark red wines, a bottle that helped put southern Tuscany firmly on the fine-wine map. First released in 1987, it reflects the estate’s pioneering spirit and its ability to craft a wine with power, elegance, and a distinctly Tuscan identity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Saffredi 2020 shows a deep, inviting color with impressive concentration. The nose opens with layers of red fruit, ripe berries, blackberry, and a refined spicy lift of clove, cinnamon, and chocolate. On the palate, it is rounded, velvety, and beautifully balanced, with ripe fruit wrapped around supple tannins and a polished structure. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a warm impression of spice and dark fruit that suggests excellent aging potential over the coming years.

Production
Saffredi comes from the Pereta vineyard in Maremma, planted at around 250 meters above sea level with southwest exposure for the older vines and southeast exposure for the newer plantings. The vineyard is planted at an average density of 4,000 vines per hectare, and the grapes are harvested separately according to ripeness: Merlot in mid-September, Cabernet Sauvignon from late September into early October, and Petit Verdot in mid-October. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 26–28°C, followed by 15–20 days of skin maceration and 18 months of maturation in French oak, 75% of it new.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for grilled or roasted red meats, game, and richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure. It also works beautifully with dark chocolate. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young, to let the aromas and texture fully unfold.
