Fattoria Le Pupille’s Maremma Saffredi 2018 is one of Tuscany’s most celebrated modern reds, a wine that helped put the Maremma on the fine-wine map. Born from the vision of Elisabetta Geppetti, it combines ripe coastal fruit, elegance, and depth in a style that has become a benchmark for the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Saffredi 2018 shows a deep, intense ruby color. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of red fruit, red berries, blackberry, and a generous spice profile that brings hints of clove, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is rounded, velvety, and beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins and a long, lingering finish. The spice gradually takes the lead, adding complexity and a polished, luxurious feel. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, and it should continue to gain nuance over time.

Production
The grapes for Saffredi come from the Saffredi vineyard in Pereta, at around 250 meters above sea level, where the older vines face southwest and the newer plantings southeast. The vineyard is planted at an average density of 4,000 vines per hectare, and the fruit is harvested in stages from mid-September through mid-October, depending on variety. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 26–28°C, followed by 15–20 days of skin maceration. The wine is then matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of them new, to build structure, complexity, and depth while preserving the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for red meats, game, and other rich, savory dishes. It is also excellent with dark chocolate, which echoes the wine’s spicy, dark-fruited profile. Serve at 16–18°C and, if possible, decant for about an hour to allow the aromas and texture to खुल fully.

Named after the two farmhouses that watch over the medieval village of Pereta like “pupils,” the estate is strongly associated with Sangiovese and the characterful Morellino wines of the area. Under Elisabetta Geppetti’s leadership, it has grown into a dynamic 75-hectare estate and earned international recognition, especially after the launch of Saffredi in 1987, a wine that brought the estate and the region worldwide acclaim.
