Description

Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a classic, traditionally crafted Brunello from one of the appellation’s historic estates. Made from 100% Sangiovese grown in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, it captures the elegance, structure and perfume that have made Brunello world-famous. This is the estate’s flagship red wine, produced for more than a century and backed by a living library of bottles in their cellar dating all the way back to the 1892 vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both youth and future complexity. The nose is refined and layered, opening with red and black cherries, wild strawberry and dried rose petals, followed by notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, Mediterranean herbs and a touch of leather and spice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with firm yet polished tannins and a vibrant spine of acidity that is typical of top Sangiovese from Montalcino. Flavors of sour cherry, plum and blood orange intertwine with savory notes of balsamic, licorice, earth and subtle oak. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable in its youth with some air, this 2019 Brunello will continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary nuances over 10–20 years, and in good cellars potentially longer.

Production
The grapes for Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino come from estate vineyards in Montalcino, where Sangiovese thrives on a mosaic of galestro (marl), clay and limestone soils at varying altitudes. This mix of poor, well-draining soils and the area’s warm days and cool nights helps to produce grapes with both ripe fruit concentration and vibrant acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of only the healthiest, perfectly ripe clusters. After destemming and gentle crushing, the wine undergoes a traditional fermentation and extended maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and fine tannins. Maturation takes place predominantly in large Slavonian oak casks, sometimes complemented by smaller French oak, for several years, followed by further bottle aging in the estate’s historic cellars before release, in line with the strict Brunello di Montalcino regulations.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shanks, wild boar ragù, ossobuco or aged Tuscan pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom risotto and roasted game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing the tannins. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles, once matured, may need a gentler, shorter decant to separate any sediment and let the bouquet blossom.

Producer
Fattoria dei Barbi is one of the historic estates of Montalcino and a key name in the story of Brunello. Owned by the Colombini family for generations, the winery was among the early pioneers to bottle and age Brunello di Montalcino as a serious, long-lived red wine, helping to shape the reputation of the region in Italy and abroad. In their cellars, a remarkable collection of thousands of Brunello bottles—starting with the 1892 vintage—testifies to the wine’s capacity for aging and the estate’s long-term commitment to quality. Today, Fattoria dei Barbi is regarded as a benchmark for traditional Brunello, consistently producing classically styled, age-worthy wines that reflect the terroir and heritage of southern Tuscany.
