Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Espectacle del Montsant shows a bright, luminous ruby-red hue—clear and vibrant rather than inky or opaque. The nose is highly perfumed and lifted, with a seductive array of red fruits, blood orange zest, and wild strawberries, layered with notes of violet, rose petals and a fine, spicy twist. There is no hint of over-ripeness; instead, the aromas are precise, fresh and constantly unfolding as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, this vintage is all about finesse and texture. The cooler 2021 conditions translate into a wine that is more refined and vertical than some warmer years, with very fine, almost silky tannins and a natural line of acidity that keeps everything sharp and focused. Flavours echo the nose: red cherry, raspberry and blood orange mingle with violet pastille, subtle Mediterranean herbs and a touch of sweet spice. The finish is long, clean and very pure, leaving a persistent impression of florals and red fruit. Espectacle is sourced from a spectacular, amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in the rugged hills of Montsant, Catalonia, where old-vine Garnacha clings to poor, stony soils and steep terraces. The combination of altitude, rocky terrain and a cooler 2021 growing season yielded grapes with great aromatic clarity and balanced ripeness. Harvesting is typically carried out by hand in small crates to preserve berry integrity, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation is traditionally focused on expressing the terroir, often using large wooden vats or neutral oak to avoid masking the fruit, followed by careful maturation that polishes the tannins without overwhelming the wine with new oak. The result is a multi-layered, terroir-driven Garnacha that captures both the power and the lift of this extraordinary site.

This refined yet intense Montsant is an excellent partner for dishes that mirror its depth and aromatics: think roasted lamb with herbs, duck breast with cherry or orange glaze, Iberico pork, game birds, or slow-braised beef with Mediterranean spices.
