Description

The 2005 Ermitage Ermite Rouge from M. Chapoutier is a standout Hermitage from one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected names. Sourced from the legendary Hermitage hill, this wine reflects the depth, structure, and longevity that have made the appellation one of France’s most celebrated for powerful Syrah.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet core with an intense, mature edge. The nose is expected to be layered and expressive, with notes of black fruits, dark spice, smoked meat, earthy minerals, and the classic floral and peppery nuances associated with great Northern Rhône Syrah. On the palate, it is likely full-bodied and concentrated, with firm tannins, excellent balance, and a long, savory finish. The 2005 vintage has the structure to age gracefully, and this wine should continue to evolve beautifully, gaining complexity over time with more leather, truffle, and dried fruit character.

Production
Ermite comes from the historic Hermitage hillside in the Northern Rhône, where granite soils and steep slopes create ideal conditions for Syrah with remarkable intensity and precision. Chapoutier is known for parcel-based winemaking and careful vineyard work, often emphasizing low yields and hand harvesting to preserve purity and site expression. Vinification is typically geared toward extracting depth and structure while maintaining freshness and transparency.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb, beef daube, venison, braised short ribs, or game with herbs and root vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least one to two hours if the wine is still showing youthful structure or sediment. If well mature, a gentler decant may be enough to open the aromas without losing delicacy.

Producer
M. Chapoutier is one of the most influential producers in the Rhône Valley, with a history that stretches back to the 19th century. The domaine is especially renowned for its work in Hermitage and for championing terroir-driven wines, biodynamic farming, and parcel-specific cuvées. Over the years, Chapoutier has earned a strong international reputation for precision, authenticity, and some of the Rhône’s most collectible wines.
