Description
E.Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Dolcetto d'Alba Bio 2022 is a vibrant, organically farmed red that showcases the lighter, fruit‑driven side of Piemonte. Made entirely in stainless steel, it captures Dolcetto’s pure, juicy charm without the influence of oak. As a wine from one of Barolo’s most respected producers, it offers an elegant, accessible introduction to the region’s red wines while staying true to traditional Piedmontese character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Dolcetto d'Alba shows a bright, medium ruby colour with youthful violet reflections. The nose is very varietal and lifted, with aromas of tart red berries such as redcurrant and sour cherry, joined by a hint of blackcurrant, subtle spice and a touch of dark chocolate in the background.
On the palate, it is light to medium‑bodied with a supple, polished tannin structure and a lively, finely etched acidity. A delicate hint of natural fruit sweetness plays against that freshness, giving the wine a lovely juiciness and clarity of red fruit. As it opens, darker and more earthy notes emerge on the finish – suggestions of fine tobacco, dry forest floor and a gentle peppery edge that add depth without sacrificing drinkability. Best enjoyed in its youth to capture its vivid fruit, it will comfortably evolve over 3–5 years, gaining a bit more savoury nuance.
Production
Sourced from organically cultivated vineyards in the rolling hills of Piemonte, this Dolcetto benefits from calcareous and clay-limestone soils that help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Yields are kept moderate, and the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are selected. In the cellar, Chiara Boschis vinifies this wine entirely in temperature‑controlled stainless steel to emphasise freshness and varietal purity, with a gentle maceration to extract colour and flavour without excessive tannin. No oak ageing is used, resulting in a clean, transparent expression of Dolcetto and its Piedmontese terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a classic, versatile table wine for everyday Piedmontese cuisine — ideal with antipasti, charcuterie, simple pasta dishes (especially with tomato, mushroom or sausage ragù), grilled sausages, pizza, and soft to semi‑hard cheeses. It also works beautifully with roast chicken, pork dishes and earthy vegetable preparations such as roasted beets or mushroom risotto. Serve at 14–16°C; a light chill accentuates its freshness. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or giving it a quick splash in a carafe will help the aromas fully unfold.
Producer
Azienda Agricola E. Pira & Figli is one of Barolo’s historic estates, gaining renewed acclaim under the stewardship of Chiara Boschis, one of the first and most influential female winemakers in the region. Based in the heart of Barolo, the estate is renowned for its work in top crus such as Cannubi, combining meticulous vineyard care with a precise, contemporary approach in the cellar. Chiara was an early adopter of organic farming in Barolo, and her commitment to low yields, hand harvesting and detail‑driven winemaking has earned E. Pira & Figli a place among Piemonte’s leading producers, with high praise from international critics for both her Barolo and her beautifully crafted everyday wines like this Dolcetto d'Alba Bio.
