Description
Enza la Fauci Obli Faro 2021 is a beautifully crafted Sicilian red that captures the windswept elegance of the Faro DOC, overlooking the Strait of Messina. Produced in small, artisanal quantities, this wine highlights the harmony between native grapes and a singular coastal-vineyard climate. Its combination of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera offers a refined, mineral-driven expression that sits somewhere between the finesse of cool-climate reds and the warmth of the Mediterranean sun.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Obli Faro 2021 shows a vibrant, translucent ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both freshness and depth. The nose is lifted and inviting, with pure aromas of red cherries and ripe raspberries intertwined with violets, wild Mediterranean herbs, and subtle notes of spice and dried orange peel.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and medium-bodied, driven by a lively, refreshing acidity and fine, well-integrated tannins. Flavours of juicy red berries, sour cherry and pomegranate are layered with hints of dried flowers, savory herbs and a distinct mineral edge from the sand, limestone and volcanic soils. The oak ageing (12–14 months in French barrels) adds gentle structure and a touch of sweet spice without dominating the fruit, leading to a long, poised and lightly spicy finish. 2021 is considered a harmonious vintage in Faro, and this wine shows excellent balance and clarity, with an aging potential of roughly 8–10 years from vintage, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and silkier texture over time.
Production
Obli Faro 2021 is sourced from steep, terraced vineyards in the Faro DOC, perched above the Strait of Messina on sand, limestone and volcanic soils. This distinctive terroir benefits from a unique meeting of cool sea breezes and warm Mediterranean sunshine, helping the grapes achieve full aromatic ripeness while retaining tension and freshness. Enza la Fauci farms sustainably with biodynamic principles, and all harvesting is done by hand to ensure careful selection of the best clusters. The native varieties Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera are vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit and varietal character. After fermentation, the components are blended and the wine is matured for around 12–14 months in French oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging to integrate the structure and refine the texture before release.
Food & Serving
This Faro is an excellent partner for refined yet flavourful dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, grilled tuna or swordfish, veal scaloppine, wild mushroom risotto, or charcuterie and aged, semi-hard cheeses. Its bright acidity and fine tannins also work beautifully with tomato-based pasta, roasted poultry and dishes featuring aromatic Mediterranean herbs. Serve at 16–18 °C, ideally slightly cool to highlight the wine’s freshness and floral notes. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to open the bouquet and soften the structure; as it ages, a gentle decant mainly to remove any natural sediment will be sufficient.
