Description
E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2019 in this impressive 3L double magnum format is a benchmark expression of one of Barolo’s most legendary crus. Sourced from the steep, powdery slopes of Cannubi, this wine captures Nebbiolo’s most refined and ethereal side. The 2019 vintage, described by Chiara as a cross between the elegance of 2016 and the warmth of 2017, delivers remarkable balance, depth, and precision.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Barolo Cannubi shows a luminous, garnet hue with delicate brick reflections at the rim, hinting at its youthful evolution. The nose is finely etched and three-dimensional, with lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and pomegranate intertwined with blue and violet flowers, rose petals, and a distinct chalky, mineral edge. Subtle notes of spice, dried herbs, and a whisper of licorice add complexity as the wine opens.
On the palate, this Barolo is all about finesse and detail rather than sheer power. The tannins are finely grained yet firmly structured, wrapping around a core of pure, crystalline red fruit. Flavors of sour cherry, redcurrant, and blood orange are layered with floral tones, crushed stone, and a gentle savory undertone. The acidity is vibrant and perfectly integrated, giving the wine energy and length. Still youthful, it shows excellent aging potential, with its structure and balance suggesting a graceful evolution over 15–25 years in a proper cellar.
Production
Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most iconic hillsides, known for its steep slopes and friable, powdery soils rich in marl and sand that lend both fragrance and elegance to Nebbiolo. The challenging terrain requires meticulous, hands-on work in the vineyard, and Chiara Boschis is renowned for her careful, sustainable stewardship of these vines. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal phenolic ripeness, then carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest clusters make it into the cellar. Vinification follows a traditional-yet-refined approach: extended maceration on the skins to extract color and tannin, followed by aging in oak (typically a mix of smaller barrels and/or large casks) to polish structure without overwhelming the delicacy of the cru. The result is a Cannubi that is precise, transparent, and deeply expressive of its terroir.
Food & Serving
This elegant and finely structured Barolo pairs beautifully with classic Piemontese dishes and refined, savory cuisine. Think veal or beef braised in red wine, truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with butter and sage, wild mushroom dishes, roasted game birds, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given the youth and structure of the 2019, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended—especially from this 3L double magnum—to allow the tannins to relax and the floral and mineral nuances to fully emerge.
Producer
E. Pira e Figli is one of Barolo’s most respected estates, and under the stewardship of Chiara Boschis it has become a reference point for modern, terroir-driven Barolo. Taking over her family’s historic cellars in Barolo village, Chiara was one of the first women winemakers in the region and has been a key voice in elevating quality and sustainability in the area. Her meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and precise cellar practices have earned the estate a reputation for wines that combine purity, elegance, and depth. Cannubi, alongside her other crus like Via Nuova and Mosconi, has helped cement E. Pira e Figli’s status as a leading interpreter of Barolo’s great vineyards, with consistently high critical acclaim and strong recognition among collectors worldwide.
