Description
Duval-Leroy Fleur de Champagne 1er Cru is a refined non-vintage Champagne that captures the elegance and precision of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Blending Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from some of Champagne’s most prized villages, it offers both finesse and depth in the glass. Created originally as a tribute to past generations of the Duval-Leroy family, this cuvée remains a benchmark for lovers of classic, terroir-driven Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Fleur de Champagne 1er Cru shows a luminous, pale gold hue with a fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its careful aging on lees. The nose opens with delicate notes of white flowers, citrus zest, and green apple, followed by hints of brioche, almond, and a touch of chalky minerality.
On the palate, the Champagne is precise and vibrant, balancing Chardonnay’s tension and purity with Pinot Noir’s subtle structure and red-fruited charm. Expect flavors of lemon curd, pear, and crisp apple layered with toasted hazelnut, fresh pastry, and a lingering mineral finish. The acidity is bright yet harmonious, making this a wonderfully versatile apéritif Champagne that also performs beautifully at the table. While designed for immediate pleasure, careful cellaring for 3–5 years will further integrate the autolytic (brioche, biscuit) notes and add complexity.
Production
Fleur de Champagne 1er Cru is sourced exclusively from villages classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru in three of Champagne’s most celebrated terroirs: the Grande Vallée de la Marne, the Montagne de Reims, and the Côte des Blancs. Chalk and limestone-rich soils provide the hallmark tension, salinity, and finesse, while the varied exposures bring layered complexity to the fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand to preserve berry integrity, then gently pressed to extract the purest juice. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to safeguard the precision of the fruit, with carefully selected reserve wines used to maintain the house style across vintages. Extended aging on the lees in bottle refines the mousse and builds the subtle brioche and nutty nuances that define this cuvée.
Food & Serving
This 1er Cru Champagne is a natural match for refined appetizers and delicate seafood dishes: think freshly shucked oysters, scallop carpaccio, sushi and sashimi, or poached prawns with citrus and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese, Comté, light poultry dishes, and delicate tartlets with mushrooms or leeks. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A brief 10–15 minutes opened in the glass is sufficient—extended decanting is not necessary, but pouring into proper tulip-shaped Champagne glasses will allow the bouquet to fully express itself.
Producer
Founded in 1859, Duval-Leroy is a family-owned Champagne house based in Vertus on the Côte des Blancs, long admired for its Chardonnay-driven style and commitment to high-quality, vineyard-focused wines. Over generations, the estate has become a reference point for elegant, gastronomic Champagnes that showcase the nuances of Premier and Grand Cru terroirs. Duval-Leroy has been a pioneer in crafting cuvées from classified vineyards, and Fleur de Champagne—first conceived in 1911 by Raymond Duval-Leroy to honor his predecessors—remains one of the house’s emblematic wines. Today, Duval-Leroy is recognized both for its precision in blending and for its role in elevating the status of grower and cru-based Champagnes within the region.
