Description
Dönnhoff Dellchen GG 2023 in double magnum (3 L) is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered steep-slope vineyards. Crafted from the Norheimer Dellchen VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, it marries crystalline precision with a haunting, floral-mineral elegance. Bottled in large format for extended development and special occasions, this is a serious collector’s wine that also happens to be irresistibly drinkable in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Dellchen GG is pale lemon with green highlights, signalling its youth and lively acidity. The nose opens with delicate lemon zest and cool citrus oil, intertwined with white summer blossom, wet stone and a subtle hint of fresh herbs like chervil. As it unfurls, you get a fine, smoky minerality from the porphyry and slate, wrapped in a precise, airy fragrance rather than overt ripeness.
On the palate, the wine is strikingly pure, bone dry and focused, led by bright, sunlit lemon and lime, with a racy, almost electric line of acidity. The texture is slender yet absolutely intense, with a prickle of energy and a fine, salty-mineral grip that recalls crushed rock and cool stream water. It finishes like a spoonful of lemon sorbet – cleansing, penetrating and mouth-watering. While already beautifully balanced and approachable, the structure and concentration give this GG excellent aging potential: expect it to develop added depth, spice and complexity over 10–15+ years, especially in this 3 L format.
Production
Norheimer Dellchen is a steep, terraced amphitheatre of porphyry bedrock covered by a skin of weathered slate, creating a warm but well-ventilated microclimate above the village of Norheim in the Nahe. The vines here are well protected and tap into deep underground water reserves, allowing them to ripen slowly and evenly without stress – ideal for finely etched, mineral Riesling. Dönnhoff harvests the GG parcels by hand in multiple passes, selecting only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. Fermentation is typically spontaneous with ambient yeasts in a mix of stainless steel and traditional large German oak casks, at cool temperatures to preserve delicacy and precision. The wine then rests on its fine lees to gain texture and nuance before being bottled as a Grosses Gewächs, their dry grand cru expression.
Food & Serving
This Dellchen GG is superb with refined, delicate dishes that allow its citrus precision and minerality to shine. Think oysters, razor clams, scallop crudo, sushi and sashimi, or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with fine vegetable dishes (white asparagus, fennel, artichokes), lighter poultry, and fresh goat’s cheese. Serve chilled but not too cold, around 9–11 °C, to let the aromatics open. In this youthful stage, especially in a 3 L bottle, a gentle decant of 45–90 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to stretch out and reveal its full spectrum of floral and stony notes.
