Description
Dominus Napanook 2014 is the estate’s second wine, offering a more approachable expression of the Dominus style while still carrying the precision and pedigree of Christian Moueix’s Bordeaux-inspired approach in Napa Valley. Originally launched in 1996, Napanook was created from fruit that would otherwise have gone elsewhere, giving wine lovers a chance to enjoy a refined, earlier-drinking Napa red with serious structure and heritage.
Tasting Notes
Napanook 2014 shows aromas of boysenberry, spicy thyme, and tobacco, leading into a sleek, elegant palate. It is marked by fine, firm tannins and a composed finish that lingers with poise rather than weight.
The wine’s profile is more restrained than many Napa Cabernet blends, with a focus on fresh dark fruit, savory complexity, and balance. While already approachable, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over several years, gaining more nuance and softness with time in bottle.
Production
The Napanook vineyard in Napa Valley benefits from a warm, dry microclimate tempered in 2014 by a wet early spring and moderate summer conditions. Christian Moueix applies a meticulous, vineyard-first philosophy here, using careful picking decisions, including separate harvesting of sun-exposed and shaded fruit, to preserve freshness and precision.
In the cellar, the grapes are fully destemmed and undergo both optical and manual sorting before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After only a few days of skin contact, the wine is pressed to emphasize bright red fruit and avoid over-extraction, then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new, before being fined with egg whites and bottled without further treatment.
Food & Serving
This Cabernet-based blend pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or duck with savory herbs. It also works well with aged cheeses and dishes featuring thyme, rosemary, or tobacco-like earthy notes. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about an hour if drinking young to open up the aromatics and soften the tannins.
Producer
Dominus was founded by Christian Moueix, one of Bordeaux’s most respected winemakers, who brought a distinctly French sense of precision and vineyard discipline to Napa Valley. The Napanook label, introduced in 1996, reflects his vision of a second wine with both accessibility and character, while the estate itself has become one of the region’s benchmark names for refined, ageworthy Bordeaux blends. Its reputation rests on exacting viticulture, careful selection, and a steadfast commitment to quality in both vineyard and cellar.
